For me, her ARTPOP performances were generally far superior to this. Her vocals were not great here, which is odd considering they could do multiple takes and she had a mask to hide behind (Mariah would have served us a 1995 pre-record with this kind of open goal.) Stupid Love at the piano is such an odd choice given the kind of song it is. Free Woman or Sine from Above would have been better options.

But the lewks. I mean. Bring it to the runway. Runway. Run-runway. Some career-bests, and almost as good as her iconic VMAs 09/10 ensembles.
 
Also, the throwback to the 1999 VMAs was cute, but made me feel old af. That world seems so far away now. I am the same age as Gags, and I get the whole "sitting up in my room" mood, but it made me think about how - even for her - being a "pop star" at this point, in this musical landscape, must feel very alien. I'm not surprised that she has been silent most of this campaign. I think she'll probably want to lean more into the "artist" / triple-threat side of her persona from now on, now that she's done the victory lap with Chromatica.
 
that piano rendition reminded me of her 2013 AMAs Do What U Want performance, where she delivered a lush performance and ended it with sitting on a piano and unnecessarily screeching for A WHOLE minute! :D

 
That Do What U Want performance was head and shoulders above this one in terms of vision, vocals and execution. Her Do What U Want performances in general were wonderful - the best being her acoustic / xylophone rendition on Alan Carr.
 
I thought the performance was absolutely BRILLIANT.

Great LOOKS, costume changes galore, beautiful set design (must have cost a bomb) that actually brought the concept of "Chromatica" to life a bit, and most importantly each track was better than the last - Stupid Love was absolutely FABULOUS (both on and off the piano, but particularly her adlibs while dancing near the end) and really earned its place right there and as a classic in her canon.

I didn't much care for the rest of Gaga performance. The piano honking we've seen before (it's never good) and the choreography was generally awful and she could barely keep up. She looked rather out of sorts. It didn't help that Ariana floated in on a cloud and made it look effortless.
 
It's a bit unfair to expect Gaga to match Ari's choreo when she's got almost a decade on her, has recurring injuries and body fatigue that have forced tour cancellations and hasn't given a performance of this kind in literally years, no? The fact that she even attempted that choreo is quite impressive to me.
 
The choreography is clearly difficult for her to execute cleanly but it's also poor in the first place anyway. The 911 section was a mess even just watching the backing dancers.

I don't think a rethink of how to deliver this songs would have been a bad thing. Group choreography / piano / group choreography is very much the same old for her. I'd have thought she'd have changed that up by now.
 
I thought it was a great performance, and just such a relief to finally see these songs with a big visual production around them. Yes the piano bit was rubbish but who actually thought we’d get a ten minute Gaga medley and escape a bit of piano self-indulgence? :eyes: It was kept to a minimum and we did get the proper version too, so all good.

It wasn’t perfect but what on earth is all this chat about it being sub-Artpop?! It was a big, bright, choreographed pop number the likes of which we haven’t seen from Gaga since the Super Bowl and then again for years before that. Unlike Artpop it didn’t leave me DESPAIRING and wondering what on earth she was thinking.

I’d gladly take a few pitchy vocals over that!

I mean, 2020 has been such a SHITE YEAR and the bar for performances being so love I was fucking starving for something like this so, I'm sorry her vocals were not up to notch and she messed up the choreography a couple of times, I wanted the theatrics and she clearly did put some effort

Maybe she should have performed form her living room like everyone else seems to be doing :greta:
 
Her vocals were shoddy on 911 but then it's a robotic song to sing anyway. I'm just happy to see an album track, any of them, wheeled out on this scale when we've been dehydrated of promo performances. Otherwise it was just fine and a SPECTACLE which is a tonic right now. The only thing is I thought she seemed a tad BORED, but at least she's staying on brand for the Chromatica era.
 
Mileys performance worked so much better because she was playing to the TV audience rather than a fake audience.

Piano bit aside, still enjoyable.

Yeah, the choreography was dire in the 911 section. It was sub-Pussycat Dolls shite, that seemed to bear no relation to the lyrics of the song.
 
Also it really makes me sad to think of her being seen as this tired old girl who's doing well to "keep up" with it all. She's still a hugely exciting popstar in terms of big pop shows, arguably still the best out of her contemporaries. I know age is clearly a THING but I just find it all a bit grim that this is possibly being seen as some sort of victory lap and commercial swan song. Maybe it's always been the way but age seems like so much more of a burden now - the days of divas having hits in their 30s seem massively diminished.

Although admittedly she has kind of caused herself to seemingly fast forward through her career by spending half the last decade shunning commercial pop and everything that made her big but there you go..

I always think Ariana is the biggest waste of talent these days - I mean, not literally, she's fucking huge and everyone adores her, but for someone SO SO GOOD her music is some bland old shite 90% of the time. She/her team are half responsible for some ghastly trends.

Imagine what they could do with an Ariana in 1999 :disco:
