I can’t speak for any other country, but among young people in the US, I think Lana del rey is mainstream

This is going to sound horrible and I hope you understand what I mean, but Ariana Grande became a household name here only after the horrible terrorist attack.
I always say an artist is mainstream here when my mother heard of them, who isn't into pop music but listens to the radio and watches the news daily, and I'm sure she never heard of Lana.

At least she has a good thing and it's something you probably never thought about, and I'm pretty sure this happens in some other foreing countries. As a country with a basic level of English, for artists with names that are difficult to pronounce or write is a lot harder I'm just thinking Gwyneth Paltrow or Rachel Weisz, which are quite intrincate for Spanish speaking people. Probably there are better examples. Well there's Schwarzenegger, I don't think many people would spell it correctly (yes I did google it), but he became too famous so that's an exception. Lana has the perfect Spanish name, and that helps a lot, believe me. Now she just needs the big hit or the Superbowl.

Also yes to this, it's hard to think there's going to be someone as famous as Michael Jackson, I would say he was not just the singer, but the most famous person in the world. I can't think of anyone close to it, forget about singers. Maybe Jesy Nelson.
