Lana Del Rey - Norman F***ing Rockwell (sixth album)

It does kind of annoy me that the album seems to have three different titles, though.

I've not got into ANY of her albums since the first one/reissue AT ALL and so I'd decided I wouldn't bother with this one. But now everyone is LOSING THEIR SHIT over it. Is it a real step up or basically MUCH OF THE SAME?

This is where I am. I'm certainly planning to give it a spin (well, a stream) later, though.
 
I wouldn't describe myself as a loon but I always have to get over the first couple of listens, mainly due to the fact that she could sing the ingredients panel of a packet of Digestives and I would swoon. The main thing about this album for me is how unproduced it sounds - it's very stripped bare and very slow. It feels elegiac.

I'm definitely a loon, but if you don't enjoy her style to being with then you'd probably feel it's pretty much the same to be honest.
 
I feel like she usually has two types of songs/sounds; one is very instant and pleasant and one is over long and seems to have no structure at all and it takes about 10 listens to get into (this is what I feel about most of Ultraviolence).
 
I still feel like a bad loon over Ultraviolence, I really didn't give it its chance (you know the 10 listens it probably needs). It remains my least played Lana album.
 
Most of Ultraviolence and half of Honeymoon and some of Lust for Life are still a struggle.
 
Girl I know. Honeymoon has some really easy stuff though like Salvatore. And then some other stuff that you KNOW is good but have to wait for to happen. On Lust For Life, Summer Bummer REALLY clicked only the other day and it's supposed to be one of the easy ones.

I'd say it's very much more of the same, but a really good version of the same. But that isn't coming from a non-loon :D

Listen to “Love Song”, “Cinnamon Girl” and “California” - these three were immediate for me. The rest may require a few listens to marinate to the non-loon although I do recommend listening to it as an album ....
 
Anyone else finding the middle section a bit of a slog? How To Disappear and California in particular just pass me by completely. I’m kind of mystified by the huge praise for the album. I love all of her albums, but this one for me feels a little lacking too often.
 
I’m doing that thing where I play an album in the other room so I half-hear it and it sort of filters through and oh my goodness gracious, ‘Cinnamon Girl’ :disco::(:disco:

California isn't hitting me yet but How To Disappear is just :mermaid::queen::unicorn:
 
California and American Record are my early favourites. I think I must have listened to the demo of the latter at some point as it feels familiar, but obviously I don't know it well enough to be disappointed by any changes. I won't listen to the demo for now as I want to enjoy the album version, which is pretty marvellous anyway.

Fuck it, I'm declaring it song of the year, let's face it nothing THAT good will come in 2019.

I think melodically and certainly the pianos give me some Aimee vibes but it’s all still pure Lana.

Ironically, Paradise may have two of my favorite Lana tracks ever on it ("Ride" and "American") but aside from "Gods and Monsters" the other five don't really do anything for me. Love all the others. It's hard to rank them to be honest - they all offer something different.

I was talking about this elsewhere - she hasn't fallen into that trap of each album having to be all things to everyone (although LFL maybe had traces of that). Instead, she's building a catalogue where there will be an album for any occasion*. NFR! is the long summer twilight of her catalogue, I think.

(*well, apart from truly joyous ones I suppose but, even then, there are songs like "Love"...)
