Time to find your inner sad/bad girl and a daddy (with a gun, a bible, and another woman) on the west coast. See you TONIGHT

OMG did not know this was on tonight. EXCITING! I've been cherry picking from it quite a bit in recent days. ready for the FULL FEEL-GOOD EXPERIENCE though.

ready to shoot this misery porn directly into my veins.

HITTING PLAY.

shared my body and my mind with you
that's all over now
did what I had to do
'cos you're so far paste me now
shared my body and my life with you
that's way over now
there's nothing more I can do
you're so famous now...

WHAT AN OPENING LYRIC.

the way her voice cracks on "you're young, you're wild, you're FREE" :disco:

this album has been quite the journey for me. it's responsible for putting me off Lana in quite a major way for some time.

it's really quite a WEIRD RECORD too (at least to begin with) - definitely feels like a deliberate u-turn away from the cinematic accessibility of Born to Die, like a rejection of the idea of being a glossy popstar. you can hear it in many of the vocal delivery choices, the muddy mixing... it's all very SERIOUS ARTIST NOW, to varying degrees of success.

"Cruel World" - didn't get it at first but time has revealed it to be an utter triumph. She's never really sounded this unhinged either (aside from "Blackest Day" maybe)

See Cruel World isn't a bad song, but it's the whole production of this album that I don't like. I can't help but feel it's a bit... messy.

Dan Auerbach of The Black Eyes produced the first five and last two (regular edition) tracks - I find it weird that they never worked together again because these are clearly the best songs on the album and they seem like a GREAT creative fit.

09 Cruel World

That last "Wooaah, oooh, you're crazy fooooooooorrr meeeeee" followed by the DRAMA of the title track opening gets me every time.

He used to call me DN
That stood for deadly nightshade
Cos I was filled with poison
But blessed with beauty and RAGE
:disco:

Me too , sis!

Ultraviolence is quite a soothing song. Almost like part Born To Die, part The Blackest Day. the spoken word middle 8 feels like a WORLD APART from the artist she is now, and maybe drags the song down a bit. definitely a necessary breather from the insanity of Cruel World though.

09 Cruel World
08 Ultraviolence

I can hear SIRENS SIRENS
He hit me and it felt like a kiss
I can hear VIOLINS VIOLINS
Give me all of that ULTRAVIOLENCE!

My WIG!

but I can't fix it
can't make him better...
and I can't do nothin' about
his strange weather...

so many amazing lyrical moments on this record. I will start referring to people's moods/temperament as their STRANGE WEATHER from this day on. :disco:

brilliant chorus. these songs really take their SWEET TIME. very leisurely hooks that unfold at their own pace.

"Shades of Cool" is the psychedelic epic I want for Chemtrails. It takes you to a different place, and she's never sounded better (and can do it quite well live too)

Ugh the distorted vocal in the chorus :disco:

OMG this electric guitar climax in the bridge *cums*

I'm struggling with scoring the songs to be honest. I don't wanna blow my whole load too soon.

09 Cruel World
08 Ultraviolence
09.5 Shades of Cool

"Brooklyn Baby" was my initial favorite back in '14. I think it runs on a bit too long these days once the male vocals creep in. But those first two verses are just *chef's kiss*

you say I'm like the ice I FREEZE
I'm churning out NOVELS like beat poetry
on amphetamines

oh to be in her head when she comes up with these images of a life LIVED DANGEROUSLY while laying around on the couch in her American Apparel top and jeans drinking a can of Pepsi :D

Well, my boyfriend's in a band
He plays guitar while I sing Lou Reed
I've got feathers in my hair
I get down to Beat poetry

by CONTRAST this is possibly my fave of the first four. it's such a ridiculous song - like you can hear her CACKLING as she comes up with this try hard NONSENSE about HYDROPONIC WEED. I bet she knew some Karen just like that. (now the Karen is she!)

09 Cruel World
08 Ultraviolence
09.5 Shades of Cool
09.5 Brooklyn Baby

the male voice in the last chorus is actually my favourite bit of the whole song.
