Let's not forget how big Super Trouper the album had been and how many copies it had sold long before LAYLOM was released - it had 9 weeks at #1 and was the #1 album of 1980 despite not being released until November. Plus all momentum had really been lost, since the last single (in the UK and I believe in every country where LAYLOM was released as a single), was the title track eight months previously. The Visitors was only 4 months away.

I imagine it's very likely it would have been bigger had it been released on 7", but I'm not convinced it would have been a #1.
