Leigh-Anne - Don't Say Love

Yeah I imagine she will end up way lower by the weeks end. But obviously that’s a great start. To be fair a top twenty is a perfectly fine opening - if it can get added to some playlists it should return to the Spotify chart soon enough.

I take it Radio 1 should be interested in this too?

I know we don't pit successful females against each other on moopy, but let's remind ourselves of Jesy's chart run with Boyz

4 - 18 - 23 - 28 - 38 - 45 - 68

I am predicting in our Nanceee style that she may not peak as high as 4, but will hang around longer.

I'd like it if this blows up - so early 00's garage as we've said, but it sounds refreshing at the moment

I do enjoy those when it’s on but a bit anonymous and forgettable.

Enters at #11. Maybe it'll pick up as I doubt she'll get the tabloid mauling Jesy received, but they've got to be disappointed with that...

See I’d say that’s a good showing. In an era where peaks mean stuff all compared to longevity, and as a 31 year old woman starting her solo pop career, that’s a strong debut. If it was the old days of sales only she’d probably be storming into the top five (heck LSL made #6 on her own), but those days are long gone.

Obviously it’ll sink next week as around half its sales were from CDs and downloads, but if it can get a decent run in the top 100 I’d say that’s a success. Despite the bands success, surely no one really thinks a solo career other than middling hits is coming from any of the four?

I appreciate the chart is a different beast these days, but I can't help but think they will be disappointed, given that you can still buy a bundle of 2 signed CD singles on her website for £1.99.

Its a banger and I am looking forward to a live perf. It's odd to think she's in her 30's now.

I read she had 8000 physical sales snd 7500 streaming sales so unless it picks up drastically this is gonna plummet next week. I just don’t see a long lasting career for her. She’s likeable but just not very interesting.

The jury is out for Perri and Jade but I think they have or had a bigger following though they’ll need to get their fingers out as the public are a fickle lot. I think Perri might click more with the general public and Jade will have the gays on her side, and they at least are loyal.

Popbitch made an interesting claim re: Jade and Perrie's solo stuff, saying it was all tied up in record label politics.

It's down 35 to #197 on Spotify now so it certainly isn't moving in the right direction...

I thought they'd (not Jesy) be bigger solo. I suppose they were tailing off as a band after a decade, and the fanbase has somewhat fragmented since the departure of Nelson.

Where would it have charted without the CD singles?

They probably are waning - I really can’t see Perrie doing much. She might have the best vocals of the group but like Leigh-Anne she just doesn’t seem that interesting.

Jade at least has somewhat of a personality and I think if she gets the music right she has the best chance of success.

Jade was the only one who held any real potential appeal for me solo.

Perrie has pipes, undoubtedly, but I don't massively like her voice and can't imagine wanting to listen to a song where she isn't diluted with more pleasant voices.

I fear they have both left it too long now though, particularly if the two previous ones are going to be seen as failures, although I'm not counting Leigh-Anne out just yet.

old songs always have a big bump at the weekend and push new material down. being back in the 200 at all is a good sign actually.

To be fair it has only been a year since they had their last gig on 14 May 2022 as a group, but Jade and Perrie really need to release something this year or else their chances of success will become harder and harder as time moves on.

Jade could easily have gone down the Ella Henderson and Becky Hill route, but then with those two, do they actually have a career outside of being rent-a-vocals on dance hits?

Perrie has always been the Claire Richards of the band to me, and like @lolly says, a song with just her vocals is not that appealing to me.

As for Leigh-Anne, it is too early to tell, indeed, but if things don‘t improve on streaming over the next few weeks, she will fall off Spotify and radio playlists and everything becomes harder. I think the issue is the song, while decent, is just not at the level it needs to be for her to have a big hit.

I could see Perri being on stage, if she wanted to go down that route, and if she can act a bit.

None of them are going to have much chart success in a solo capacity. Tarot suggests they think about finding different careers :)

Perrie would have been huge at any time up until about 2010 with the power vocals. Now I don’t know wear she fits into a world of Lana Del Ray, Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish.

Maybe a career as another Ella Henderson awaits, subbing for faceless DJs in chart house music.

grabbing a spot on Jon Batiste's album is not a bad gig for her at all

She's #8 on the airplay chart. I think it just isn't crossing over. It looks to pretty much be in freefall at the moment.

yes this is much better than the chart performance is suggesting, I think its already been covered though its going to be hard for any of them to cross over solo now into the big time

I mean it’s done 3.4 million on Spotify in what, twelve days? That’s not horrendous is it? About 250k+ a day, but most days less than 50/60k in the UK, so she at least has some form of international base, even if it won’t see her doing too much chart wise.

Drops 41 spots in the UK in its 2nd week:

Don't Say Love: #11-#52

But there's an "R&B version" coming :eyes:

Despite missing the top ten and only managing one week in the top 40, this has now had a longer top 100 run than Jesy Nelson’s Boyz.

Don’t Say Love: 11-52-59-54-65-71-86-75.
Boyz: 4-18-23-28-38-45-68

It really illustrates how difficult it is to define a hit single these days. Are they going to be disappointed by how this did? Almost certainly. But it’s been massive on the radio for months now, and unlike Jesy there’s no sense that she actively made a fool of herself. If you asked a random person who listens to mainstream radio, they’d probably assume it was a major hit.

I was listening to this only yesterday and thinking how much I like it. Yes it probably wasn't huge like they wanted it to be, but it was a solid hit and they have something to work with.
