I do think major labels should be required to provide proper counseling for artists, but I believe most do at this point, at least on paper.

The real issue likely stems more from that artistic careers attract many people with unrealistic expectations, combined with the strong financial incentive to overbook gigs, both for the artists and those working around them. I don't know how to rectify that.

If they have unrealistic expectations, no doubt at least it's partly due to having smoke blown up their arse by labels when they are a cash cow, and then being as welcome as cold sick when they aren't.
 
As a somewhat deranged aside: Boyzone, Girls Aloud, The Wanted, S Club and now One Direction all losing a member at a young age is starting to feel a bit like a WITCH'S CURSE placed on UK&I pop groups, isn't it. Especially when only one of these was due to misadventure. (Two, if you're Jan Moir.)

We've had four consecutive years of it happening, now.

This is just confirmation bias. Everyone knew he was on drugs but no one was saying ‘he’ll be dead before he’s 32’… he was hardly Amy Winehouse.

Oddly, not on Niall's page. He seems to have nicer fans.
 
"Moral duty" is an oxymoron. The whole point of morals is that you act on them out of your own volition motivated by good INTENTION. If you have to remind the record label to "act right" and legalize it into a "duty" then it's no longer a moral.

These industries are predatory by nature because they literally turn humans into objects. Their very purpose is incompatible with moral behavior.

I suppose his solo career didn’t really leave much to work with, and a lot of 1D stuff is probably a bit too perky. Perhaps Story of my Life?

This is the point I’m trying to make.

We all say ‘it’s the fame, it destroys them’… but I’m not sure that celebrities are more prone to this than non-celebrities. It’s just they don’t report the million of drug addicts who die every year.

Yeah I assume a 1D song will do it. Bless him but I don’t see any of his solo work being the one they attach to

I never thought of that but there are quite a few songs charting on iTunes. And his song Teardrops is at #5. Not sure if it will transfer over to streaming.
 
Odd to think that at 31 he lived four years longer than Winehouse.

Obviously a lot of it is down to their respective images (tortured jazz singer vs teen pop icon) but if anything it brings home just how young she was at the end.

Payne's last single, Teardrops, released in March, entered the US iTunes chart, alongside his 2017 debut solo single Strip That Down.

One Direction hits Story Of My Life (2013), debut What Makes You Beautiful (2011) and Night Changes (2014) also re-entered the charts.

Payne's only solo album, 2019's LP1 also charted on US iTunes, as fans streamed his record in his memory - along with One Direction albums Four (2019), Midnight Memories (2013) and debut Up All Night (2011).

In the UK Teardrops entered the iTunes chart at number seven while his collaboration with Rita Ora - For You, Familiar with J Balvin and Strip That Down also appeared on the charts - with LP1 re-entering the charts at number 16.

Meanwhile One Direction tracks including Kiss You and Best Song ever were among the 10 new entries on the chart. - with the boyband's albums also spiking in streams.

I noticed this and it’s absolutely atrocious. Being chronically and obsessively online doesn’t tend to be a factor when someone dies in shocking and tragic circumstances like this.

Also, ‘For You’ was, and remains, sensational.
 
I hate the whole public grief thing. I can't imagine having to grieve on social media. Or why you would want to. But being pressured into it by so called fans is disgusting.
 
I mean celebrities have always released PR statements when someone dies haven't they? But I think being in showbiz in 2024, where you're accessible to people ALL the time, people start to feel entitled. I swear every time I hear the phrase "How could she do this to the fans?!!!" I just cringe. Again, it's what happens when people are turned into commodities.

Yeah the last big one I saw was when Shannon D passed and people bombarded Jennie Garth’s IG with BITCH TELL US YOU ARE SAD. I’m like damn they don’t even get along and it’s only been like 6 hours since the news broke :D

It's like public grief is just another form of "content".

Well Night Changes is their best single and feels appropriate, even though he isn't heavily featured.

I was surprised to see it is their most streamed, it didn't seem to be that big a hit at the time.
