Let’s see how this GOES. On Monday we (hopefully not just me) will be doing a sync listen of two iconic, but often overshadowed, pop classics at 8pm UK time. If this goes well perhaps we can make our way through the entire discography in advance of their new album and tour (coming 2021).

Eat to the Beat expands upon the pop acumen of Parallel Lines into power pop, wall of sound territory with “Dreaming”, “Union City Blue” and the title track, while venturing into the existential disco drama of “Atomic”, dynamic funk of “Hardest Part”, and Motown steeped “Slow Motion”. The album is relentless until it is comatose (“Sound a Sleep”). For reasons unknown, the album lacked an enduring hit in the States, but gave us the first long form video album when the format was in its infancy.

Autoamerican was maligned by some critics when it arrived in Autumn 1980 after “Call Me” dominated that summer. Rolling Stone declared it one star out of five, seemingly out of spite for its experimentalism and almost intentional lack of cohesion. But almost exactly 40 years later, Autoamerican’s unapologetic hodgepodge of disco, jazz, rap, reggae, and punk, is its finest attribute and makes it more enduring than most albums of the era. The album was perhaps the beginning of the end, they were clearly high as kites at this time and friction in the band was growing (perhaps why there was no tour and only two singles). But we stan.

WHO IS IN?

Definitely in for Eat To The Beat. Not sure if I'll be around for both, though.

Sorry for the last minute change but this will be moved back to MONDAY at 8PM UK TIME after all. I'm having to entertain family against my will this evening :eyes:

THREAD TITLE UPDATED. @Jark please tag everyone.

Thanks DOLL. Do people have a preference for 8pm or 9pm etc?

BUMP - Official start time is 8:30 p.m.

LIGHT UP A CIGGY AND BUCKLE UP

Actually I got ready for 8pm, so I'm doing a short Blondie playlist first

Dreaming has often been compared to Dancing Queen. Chris Stein has said himself “Dreaming” is pretty much a cop of [ABBA’s] “Dancing Queen.” I don’t know if that was where we started, or if it ended up just happening to sound like that.

I can't honestly say I've ever really got the comparison, but then I'm notoriously shit at that. I still don't REALLY see the similarity between Born This Way and Express Yourself.

I have nothing else on and by chance I've just had a ciggy so I guess I'm in!

I'm knee deep in video editing and recording tonight, sorry! Thank you for thinking of me though

With Miley at least partly channelling Debbie Harry these days, this ought to be a highly relevant listen.

I shall stop by for a bit. I only recognise two songs on Autoamerican, so may not stick around for that.

That intro in "Dreaming" reminds me so much of "Born to Run" by Bruce

I totally don't get the comparison of Dreaming to Dancing Queen either. Very good though.

Have you listened to any of their albums before :o
never dear! the things I do for you!

I'm no Blondie expert even when it comes to the singles but I like the classics plenty so I'm very OPEN to a potential STAN CARD APPLICATION in two hours.

"Fade away, RADIAAAAAATE" has some of its flavor to me.But definitely a completely different song.

JARK 13/10

"The Hardest Part" made sense as a US only single with the disco backlash etc, it is the most overtly funk track on the album that was increasingly ON TREND in 1980. But it limped in at #84 or something here. I still love it.

09 Dreaming

Dreaming is a very MELODIC, FUN way to kick things off. I was actually a bit surprised and upset that it was over so fast :D

09 Dreaming
07 The Hardest Part

a bit shouty for my liking in places and more rooted in the sound of the times but not BAD

"Union City Blue" might be my favorite song of all time - if not a definite top five contender. The first two verses are ecstasy encapsulated into song. A shame no one of the general public really knows it these days.

I'm not a big fan of The Hardest Part. I like the guitar line, but I'm not hugely keen on the vocal. I'd have chosen Union City Blue as the second single over it, much like the Europeans did.

10 Dreaming
09 The Hardest Part
10 Union City Blue
