There are 4 bonus tracks (3 conspicuous by absence despite your claim to include all recorded song by our Lorde and saviour) - this is comfortably the best tho

this is about being part of the popular clique, 'graduating' out of your friendship group into some kind of higher sphere, and feeling conflicted about it. such a unique and thoroughly Lorde angle for a song.

the only problem that i got with the club
is how you sever from the people who watched you grow up

And when she sings "we'll be waiting at the end" you realise she was one of the left-behinds.

12. Yellow Flicker Beat

This was from the Hunger Games. I think it is such a transition from the teenage sound of the first album to the more adult second album.
 
The Love Club is a standout for me. It's probably my favourite from this era as a whole.
 
to me Yellow Flicker Beat is like an evolution of the debut sound if she had stuck with that for the second record, rather than going in a softer direction.

it took me a long time but I love it now. everything she touches is GOLD honestly.

13. Magnets (Disclosure feat. Lorde)

God I LOVED Disclosure around their first album. The second wasn't nearly as good, but this was such a standout.

'Magnets' sort of passed me by at the time, but it's a fun little bop.
 
I find Magnets ever so slightly lacking tbh. the song is great but the production is too lethargic.

the A-Trak remix is fucking next level however and makes me wanna take a good dick.

Next up is Melodrama, which I personally consider a masterpiece

1. Green Light

Weirdly, from both albums, the lead single is one of the songs I go back to the least. This one is disjointed between the verses and the chorus but it really works anyway.
 
I remember the premiere of Green Light. such a moment. such a rush when that piano comes in and suddenly it blossoms into a banger and you realise it's about to cum all over your tits.

I liked the first album for what it was, but I wasn't really a fan of Lorde until Green Light came out and absolutely blew me away.

That piano!
 
2. Sober

This has the sparse-ness of the first album, but something about it is just more mature.

This one really does capture the feeling of feeling on top of the world with someone, but realizing its not REAL
 
I think Greenlight does a really good job of capturing the maelstrom of emotion that comes with a messy break-up when you're THAT AGE. That blend of excitement, and apprehension, and regret, and DANGER, and knowing you're probably going to bump into them in a REVS.
 
Sober is such a funny one - quite understated but really very addictive once it beds in. I think she did a making of, maybe for the podcast Song Exploder, which broke down the layers of production - it's so fascinating how many different things there are going in a song which seems on the surface quite minimal.

the touches of brass are exquisite.

Last year I went through a time when I ended things with a guy (not really a breakup but similar) and it coincided with the beginning of lockdown and this album REALLY hit me

Not-so-fond memories of forgetting which order to do the tequila, salt, lime combo.
 
3. Homemade Dynamite

Trying to write about these songs makes me think that I really take what I want from music and often ignore what the lyrics are often actually meant to mean :D
