Living For Love is the only lead single in the last 20 years that hasn't been a collaboration, isn't it?
 
Thing is, you can't blame her for trying to get some streams in these days. It's the only (slim) chance she has of making a dent chart-wise.
 
Compared to most of her past novelty features, Sabrina makes the most sense.
 
Considering Popular has been her only real shart success of late, it was inevitable she would seek a collaboration. Let's just be thankful it's not Taylor Swift.
 
Would Taylor even be interested in a Madonna collab? Something tells me if it's not some bland Caucasian 'singer-songwriter', she's NOT INTERESTED.
 
Trying to think if anyone has had a genuine hit from a new single release 40+ years into their career

The Beatles did it with a posthumous unearthed and remastered song

Elton did it with remixes and collabs

Elvis did it with remixes and limited edition reruns (in a time when physicals still ran the charts)

All came with heavy caveats…

The methods to make a hit change rapidly these days. On her side is the fact that the streaming world is a lot more accommodating with new music from legacy acts than it was a few years ago. She might get a short burst minor hit. But can she really expect a chart comeback?
 
Kylie was a big comeback song that definitely was a success, but as a chart hit it did “okay”.

On the 30+ years front, Cher wins that contest.
 
I don’t see her getting a huge hit again BUT I would love her to prove me wrong
 
The sharts are stale AF right now. You have End Of Year Top 10 charts with 5 year old songs on them. I think Madonna could easily make a SHART SPLASH with the right producer and feature.
 
how are we defining a big hit? a global top 10, not powered by CD singles in key markets like the UK or equivalent trickery? staying power? a billion streams within a year or two like most big hits today? it's never going to happen.

what she could get with the right song is a top 20/30 that builds and sticks around a while in her spotify top 5/10 among her signature hits. but it would have to be something AS GOOD as her best 00s material to have a fighting chance.
 
just having a song organically popular enough to sustain the album beyond week 2-3 would be a major victory for her at this point.

Abba Don't Shut Me Down was top 10 and it hung around a while (in my head at least)
 
If she came back with Hung Up now chances are it wouldn't chart like it did back in 2005. I just want something good and a video that conveys her being an icon who is totally above caring - the people she'd be competing with in the hit parade won't be anywhere near her when they reach the same age so hit-chasing I hope isn't the agenda.

Dua Lipa, Charlie XCX, FKA Twigs, would also be solid collab choices imo.
 
Rolf Harris had a top 30 hit forty years after his first one. A model to follow for sure.
