Given the theatrical revival of course people are talking about Madonna's Evita again and of course there was the whole Patti LuPone drama.

Things have changed and times have moved on.

But I'm also inspired by @Iguana in the main thread today.

So how would you rate her performance in the film out of 10?

 
I think she's phenomenal. Her voice is so beautiful throughout.

She has the perfect energy and defiance and sadness and sense of loss.

She has no subtlety but the role doesn't call for it.

The whole film is a triumph.

She should have TWO noms at this point, one for Masterpiece, how she fucked up the eligibility for that I’ll never understand considering she was the literal director
 
She is PHENOMENAL. You entirely forget you're watching Madonna, which is a feat she's never managed before or since. The emotion in her voice carries the whole thing and I don't give TWO FLYING SHITS if that meant changing the key or not.

The role of a lifetime and she was snubbed at the Oscars for who she was, period.
 
I think Madonna is fantastic in this film. I don't think it matters that she doesn't have a stagey voice, because that's not the format, and there is nobody better suited for what is essentially a feature length music video than the Queen of MTV. She's much better suited than Patti LuPone would have been or whatever.

I don't love the artistic direction generally though. Why is it so BEIGE?

Upon reflection, an 8.

I think she sounds best on Another Suitcase, even if it should have been Andrea Corr.

And You Must Love Me is great and her acting is fab. I love the film a lot but it isn't as gripping as the stage show.

I’m starting a podcast begging our escaping members that ran off yesterday to come back
 
Fun factoids[ sort of ] - she was actually originally toying with the role in '87, and then of course famously in '90-'91 and it got very close with Oliver Stone then it got shelved again.
I'm glad it took as long as it did because, let's face it, '87 Madonna would have turned it into a turkey. '91 Madonna was at the peak of her Hollywood prowess and she probably would have looked sensational but I think she needed the Erotica / SEX backlash to make her hungry for the role again in a different way.

So anyway we all know that both Merly and Michelle Pfeiffer were favourites and I think they both auditioned (and maybe even screentested?) And I think Michelle would have pretty much gotten the role had it not been for the famous 4-page handwritten letter from M. Ciccone to Alan Parker.

Good times.
 
Also: good ol' Madge tried to shoehorn herself into 'You Must Love' by sending them ol' Lloyd Webber a few lyrical 'ideas' and themes, which he flatly rejected.
Shame because I suspect she probably would have improved the song.
Though I suspect any chances of an Oscar for the song would have been scuppered by having her on as a co-writer. So maybe he DID know best...

Oh for sure. He wasn’t going to scrap his chances on an Oscar bait song that good
 
Also think that Jonathan Pryce was great in it
Banderas not so much
 
Madonna's main issue with acting is her speaking voice. She doesn't let go, has a reservation to her or the accent. I always think her huskier early 90s voice would have been a good thing to lean into.

Here, she doesn't have this issue and regardless of key adjustments, was showcasing a vocal ability we'd never had executed from her so undeniable. For me, there are no flaws and it's her perfect big screen moment.
 
Madonna has always been a good actress in her music videos so I think that’s why this worked so brilliantly
