Madonna + Maluma 'Medellin'

Of course reviews are promo! I saw some PROMO posters for the album near Shoreditch station today but very quickly started thinking about those new Pringles rice fusion flavours instead

I have to say that I can’t really remember how most of ‘Medellin’ GOES apart from the novelty 1-2 bits and SLOW DOWN PAPI

I'm quite the fan of the Peking Duck with hoi sin sauce ones :disco:

What has she got lined up?
Billboard Music Awards performance on 1st May followed by GLAAD Award appearance and then Eurovision.

Billboard performance will be Medellín but Eurovision may well be a different song.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it is the next single (rumoured to be I Rise) that gets playlisted by uk radio.

Sorry but posters and reviews have nowhere near the same impact as, say, an appearance on Britain’s Got Talent or Strictly etc.

Hasn’t it debuted higher than Beyoncé on Spotify (who was also released on the same day with more prominent adverts and press coverage ie promo according to the definition here)?

Was Beyonce even released on Spotify? Kworb isn't showing any spotify positions, just Apple music.

Well of course not but they’re still PROMO!

I must say that the PRINGLES RICE FUSION PROMO has been spectacular. I saw a poster on a wall AND laid my eyes on some hot in-store promo - basically a CARDBOARD STAND - and could hardly think about anything else for the rest of the day. Beat that Ciccone! :tongueout:

I can see it on my Spotify and it was added to many of the big playlists on Friday. It was certainly far more prominently advertised on Apple on Wednesday.

Yes, but you'd hope a lead Madonna single might feature in the Top 200 songs of perhaps just ONE other country a couple of days after release, surely?

I'm not calling it a flop - far too early days to tell. But I fail to see how it can't be regarded as disappointing.
Adjust your expectations. She's a 60 year old woman regularly criticised simply for being old and not wearing cardigans and it's a platform almost exclusively for young artists. Nobody would've expected a better result. The numbers themselves are fine for now and the real test will be whether they completely collapse or become stable.

My expectations may be off, but I can't help but be disappointed that in the UK she can't register in the top 200 tracks in the country on spotify. Or that in terms of iTunes she has underperformed here in relation to almost every country.

But then I guess we've been far from her most fertile hit making ground for a long time now.

I honestly never thought she would have a hit- surely it’s all about how the album performs at this stage in her career anyway...

I'd be very happy with a UK No. 1 album and if she can manage similar (or slightly better) ticket sales in comparison to the Rebel Heart Tour at this point in her career. The icing on the cake would be if one of the songs manages to go top 20 but I would think that is rather unlikely.

I never thought she'd have a hit single (whatever that means now, anyway), but I did hope she'd race up iTunes with a bit more force.

But yes, of the three indicators (single/album/tour) it's the least important by some distance.

25k-30k will get you the #1 album comfortably most weeks now. Surely she has that in her.

I don't see why though? The song is Spanglish and she's coming off Rebel Heart, which was hardly a success in the UK. And the last time she had a hit in this country was over ten years ago.

Because iTunes sales are relatively low these days. I'd have hoped her hardcore fanbase here would have been big enough.

Yeah but as an example of hardcore base, I've actually not bought it on iTunes. Why should I? I stream it on Spotify whenever I want and I've pre-ordered the physical albums. I'm sure most of her hardcore fanbase has done the same. It's only the ultra loons at this stage that would buy it on iTunes and yes she's not got that many left 30+ years into her career.

I get that - as I've said, downloads for me are the worst of both worlds. But then I'd have hoped the hardcore fan base would have been enough to get her into the top 200 tracks on spotify, I guess

The charts have been essentially a cute curio for years. I don't understand why you all care how this performs with straight people.

The fact that Medellin has achieved its first No. 1 on a Latin chart further proves that only Trump supporters, Brexiteers and racists don't support Madame X.

Anyway, looks it's back to picking up a tiny bit after the BH weekend on Spotify worldwide but falling on iTunes.

17/04/2019 520,454
18/04/2019 1,293,718 (+773,264)
19/04/2019 2,288,372 (+994,654)
20/04/2019 2,933,653 (+645,281)
21/04/2019 3,418,691 (+485,038)
22/04/2019 3,945,165 (+526.474)

UK radio has still not touched it. I suppose the video premiere will slightly improve some streaming figures but, really, unless radio stations start to pick it up I think we are heading for a freefall..

Has she really filtered so many fans at this point in her career? Madonna loons are forever surely?
Mariah Carey is proof of filtering down loons. Couldn’t believe she hadn’t retained enough to do better at least in week 1 with Caution.

Chart success is a strange one. I think ultimately I don’t care. In 2019 she has nothing to prove and I’m glad she’s still recording. However it was lovely when Kylie went #1 with Golden and top 40 with Dancing so I guess I care a bit.

I'd say Mariah's situation in the UK is probably like Madonna's in the US. I reckon Madame X will manage 3-4 weeks in the Top 40 in the UK, and it will probably debut at No. 1 or No. 2 in the UK.

I've decided the middle 8 is a TOTAL10/10 MOMENT of pure joy, the bit where they go

Si te ENAMOROOOO
(Si me enamoraaaas*crox*)

I love how Madonna dared to go there emulating melodic embellishments with half-arsed spanish, clearly she hasn't been practicing since Cuidado Con Mi Corazón :disco:

Um, clearly you have forgotten the 38th best Madonna song of all time Spanish Lesson!

Seeeeeeeeeenorittaaaaaaaaaaaa
She just wants to fall in laaaaaa*crox*vvv

Higher than much-loved, huge in Europe (Italy, Hungary and Greece :disco:) and still massively popular in the clubs all-time classic ‘Girl Gone Wild’ though!

I'm assuming with being out the top 200 on streaming and sales falling it'll likely miss the top 100 by Friday? :(

A promo disc with a 4 minute radio edit is doing the rounds which means that hopefully radio may pick it up soon.

I think Jo Wiley played it last night on R2. :(
