The bourgeoisie and the rebel...

I like American Pie. Yes I DO. Though clearly the best thing from that "era" is "Time Stood Still".

Oh PLEASE dial Pat Leonard's number again, FOR PITY'S SAKE

*speed dials David Guetta and Pharrell :manson: *

I thought "Time Stood Still" was Madonna/Orbit only! :o

Funky really DOES hate the vocoder, n'est-ce pas?

Because it's pretty hard to deny that "Nobody's Perfect" is utterly glorious, both musically but especially lyrically.

It's all about the majestic and yet understated OUTRO when it comes to "Nobody's Perfect"

Mmm-mmmm Mmmm--mmmm
YEA-AHAHHHH
Mmmm-mmmm Mmmm--mmmmm
YEA-AHHHH
Perfect....
Perfect...

Indeed it was.

Well I am glad that, the usual suspects aside, "Amazing" is generally considered a load of OLD JUDGE TATS

I did TRY once subscribing to the school of thought that "Amazing" is, er, amazing and that it's actually better than "Beautiful Stranger" but, really, that's just rubbish.

And I'm glad to know that Madonna herself agrees with that sentiment, given that she AXED it off the Drowned World Tour setlist when the label wanted to release it as a single and use the perf as a live video.

Amazing is definitely the weak link - American Pie aside.

I love I Deserve It too, it's so tender. Bit sad in retrospect though, given that she just can't keep a man. :(

Can we have this Madonna back please? Now that Kylie is once again PERSONA NON GRATA chez moi, a killer album could get LA HAG back in the GAME for me :disco:

Ooh, I haven't listened to Cyberraga for a while. It's not great but it certainly has quite a SPRING in ITS STEP.

Probably not quite the world beating EPIC she had in mind when she summoned Talvin Singh to Madonna Towers mind.

I love the JUXTAPOSITION of the folky/country sound with those siren type synths at the very end of "I Deserve It". It's all very 'lone ranger' and immediately makes me think of the album's art work - particularly the cover image. It's nor all glitz and glamour and cowboy "disco" at all, for if you scratch the surface there is depth and melancholy.

It really was the best album she did in the third decade of her career. She tried to take it a step further with American Life and bit off more than she could chew (abstract minimalist lyrics does not equal 4-year-old diary and slight mental retardation, Madge) and by the time Confessions came round she was happy to paint herself as a superficial disco dolly and nothing more. Hard Candy, er, wel...

WHEN are Funk/Chrissy/Lou/Suede going to meet up? I have a feeling it will be the MEETING of MINDS to END all MEETINGS of MINDS! :disco:

Well I've already met TWO OF YOU

but I do AGREE :disco:

I think we talked about CLAPHAM in a very FLIPPANT way... I think we need to get back ON THAT

We need to go out and GO OFF to WIFLFAG Above & Beyond 12" Club Mix in tribute to this thread

more like a meeting of hinds!

(don't mind me i'm just bitter about not being invited)

Jark is full on INSANITY mode there though.

As far as I can tell I haven't posted in this topic up to now

A good album but a bit too inconsistent to be a great one

The peaks soar so high that the dregs go almost undetected as a whole. I was impressing myself singing What It Feels Like To A Girl in the car over the Christmas period - the single remix takes off in a way she's only done with Hung Up since. Runaway Lover is such a skidmark, what a clunker. It could do with just one more fizzy club banger though. I love Amazing, any song with an excessive reliance of hmmmmmmm's over actual lyrics has always been a good thing as far as Madge is concerned. Don't Tell Me gets an 8 but was the perfect choice for single #2.

I LIKE, but it's a bit uneven if I'm being honest

I think Don't Tell Me has to be one of the most underrated big hit singles in her back cat... it really is such a GORGEOUS GROOVE.

Queening out hard to I Deserve It right now.

And that's the sort of sound I'd love her to still be doing now - with the right production I don't think it would sound dated at all, despite being nearly two decades old. It's not so far removed from Ghosttown or Joan Of Arc, really.

PROBABLY my most beloved Madge album

God I adore this album. And I NEVER understood the antipathy for the swirly loveliness of Runaway Lover.

It's grown on me the last few years apparently. The second half is the stronger half, IMO.

I don't care for Cyberraga or American Pie but 10 all day for "Time Stood Still".

What do you make of the GORGEOUS GROOVE of DTM tho?

Fabulous. I Deserve It in particular is wildly underrated.
