M&S closing 100 stores over the next 4 years.

By then I'll be over 50. Where will I get my elasticated waist slacks in a range of neutral shades then? :(

Carphone Warehouse closing 92 stores.

I'm guessing they have many hundred stores, though. I think we've got about ten here.
 
Ours closed AGES ago. In fact phone shops in general seem to have done a SHOE SHOPS
 
Oh I still go there quite regularly, particularly for make-up, accessories and occasionally clothes. They're much better than Debenhams and cheaper than John Lewis.
 
I don't recall ever going in one. They're closing the Oxford street branch.
 
House of Fraser was supposed to be the FLAGSHIP STORE in the massive new city centre retail development that they've been going to build here since forever and that the council still won't admit IS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN

GOOD LUCK WITH THAT
 
Looks like ours has been spared the axe. They do have good sales. Can't remember the last time I bought anything in there full price, though. And yes, much better than mouldy old Debenhams.

I think Victoria. That and Oxford Street are the ones I go to!

There’s a deal at my work where we have a HOF reloafable gift card and we can top up the balance for a sizeable discount, sometimes up to 20% - I always use it when buying expensive handbags.
 
The Bournemouth one is going and according to the comments on the ECHO it’s the final nail in the coffin for this town. :( I’m going to have to move.
 
Our HoF is the lynchpin of the new(er) development. I wouldn't be surprised if they have been able to negotiate a very favourable deal to stay.
 
Oh I have been in one then... in Bournemouth.

We have a Debenhams and Fenwicks in terms of department stores.
 
I don't think I've ever been in a Fenwicks, other than the one in London about a decade ago. I'm not even sure where that one is - is it New Bond St or somewhere around there?
 
Glasgow not closing which is probably - it would leave a massive hole in Glasgow's city centre if it closed, one that very likely couldn't be filled.

Considering House of Fraser began in Glasgow, I very much doubt that they would get rid of the Glasgow store, though that wasn't the original location.

I only realised at the weekend that they have a store in Loch Lomond Shores when I went with my mum, it's not very big though!

Yes, it's probably THE prime retail spot in the whole of Glasgow City Centre. It can't come cheap. We need stores like that just as much as Primark (ugh)
 
Capitalism is a race to the bottom, we'll end up with entire streets of bookmakers and vape shops and like it.
 
I went into the House of Fraser in Maidstone a few times when I lived there but that's about it. Fenwicks is lovely in Canterbury and pretty much that city's centerpiece shop but it's clearly all a ticking timebomb now.

I do find it mind boggling however that M&S still sells more clothes in their shops in the UK than anyone else, Primark included. How on earth is that still possible?!

I'd imagine M&S (at least at present) have a lot more stores, don't they?

Yeah Fenwick is the glittering centre piece of shopping in . It really is FUCKING LOVELY, but I can't afford much in there, nor can many people to be fair.

What’s the difference between pound land and pound world? I have only ever been in a pound land (I think) for stuff for my sons birthday party when he was young and impressionable.
 
Poundland are the bigger chain I think. They swallowed up the 99p Stores a couple of years back and had some no doubt thrilling tv programmes as well.

Possibly but how? They have closed a lot over the years whereas Primark is increasingly all over the shop and the ones around here seem to TEEM with the hordes. I know Primark must have to sell about 4 things to equal the price of an M&S garment but it's still quite shocking to me. Given we're only talking clothes sales and not food, it does make the whole "M&S IN CRISIS" stories seem ludicrous if it's topping the pile and beating Primark.

I think Next is still second above Primark

I'm generally looked at like a scummy tinker with my backpack on but it's lovely stuff nonetheless.

Fenwicks is fucking invincible to all this.

My brother in law contracted quite high up in the company and told stories of the whole thing being an utter shambles, but the family who own it are stinking rich (and mad) and would rather keep the businesses open - even if they're making a massive loss - as a point of pride.

Plus they own all the buildings they're in so running costs are pretty cheap.

Of course, everything has it's breaking point, but still.

It doesn't really surprise me. M&S is probably as popular with the middle aged and middle class who are happy to pay well over a hundred quid for a woollen jacket, whereas Primark appears to be teeming with gaggles of girls who shop together but don't spend as much together as one pensioner.
