Greggs also > poxy old Pat Val as well and the reason is very much Yum Yums :disco:

Oh it's crap, you can get better in bakeries in any backwater in France. More proper patisseries please.
 
Although there’s nothing wrong with la Belgique, I must say I felt a bit cheated this evening when I discovered that Madame Val wasn’t French at all but Belgiumese :(

Oh no i have had some delicious cakes in Belgium too :disco:
I assumed it was just a British imitation. Reading now it has 8 shops in 2006 and 192 in 2017...totally unsustainable !
 
Patisserie Valerie really is no fucking surprise. Given they only had 8 stores a few years ago, and they've spread everywhere with no advertising. How did they really think that would go for them?

A proper business does their research on a new location and their markets. Not expands and just assumes.

There's one here but I've never been in. It's in the wrong place for a start. And do they only do posh cakes? I've no idea. Don't care.
 
Pat Val have become proper grotty too. I went to one recently, and it was skanky and the poor staff were so pissed off with the whole thing, one refused to let me pay for my cake.

I think they do general sandwich type lunch things and cream teas as well, don't they? I've only ever bought cakes at over £3 each or whatever it is if I want to treat my mother or something though - and she'd invariably say she'd prefer a couple of egg custard tarts for a quid in Greggs.

I was going to say the same. One of the stores here is just really dark, grimy and miserable. It's meant to be a premium product - but the seating areas in Gregg's is genuinely more pleasant.

The one thing I love about here is how badly Greggs does. They opened four but two have shut down, because Thomas the Baker is about fifty times better. <3 TTB
 
I'm afraid in central areas here Gregg's don't seem to have any competition. I guess largely due to rents.

On the shopping streets in residential areas I've seen a few open and close though.
 
I didn't realise Patisserie Valerie owned the sandwich shop Philpotts as well. They were my sandwich shop of choice when I worked on the city centre. Again, overpriced though.

Even in my suburban 'town', which is on the whole relatively chavvy, we used to have three bakeries next to each other - Greggs, Thomas the Baker and cooplands. Greggs pulled out last year. Losers.
 
Ridiculous hour or not, I REALLY want a Yum Yum now.

It’s not like I’m POOR but I do increasingly resent paying over three or four quid for a slice of tart
 
I have never been in a Pat Val but I’ve seen lots of people saying it is grubby :gross: and also that while the cakes are pretty they taste of nothing.

I didn't even realise it was a CHAIN. Ugh. Not that I ever go in there, if I wanted to play TWENTY QUESTIONS I'd go on TV

They have two here but I've never seen them anywhere else.

And yes, a classic example of TOO MUCH CHOICE.
 
No, Philpotts is sandwiches. But production line faux artisan ones. So you have a choice of well over a dozen breads or rolls, about 4 or 5 different butters or spreads, umpteen different hams and cheeses, plus a staggering array of other fillings and condiments. Any unsuspecting soul going in asking for a ham and cheese sandwich has got a rude awakening coming.

It's all much nicer than subway, but it's hard to order a sandwich and get what you want without facing at least half a dozen questions. You have to go in knowing exactly what you want and ask for it.

Plus of course the queue is invariably always held up by a clueless wanker spending 5 minutes deciding if they want English, Dijon, whole grain or pinot noir mustard.
 
I haven’t set foot in here either. Is this the burger joint that everyone complains about being massively overpriced?

Stop bloody charging a fortune for chips. It’s teally a no brainer for GBK and Byron. Chips cost them next to nothing to make and people resent paying £10-£13 for a pretty decent burger but then another £4 for a side dish plus drink, when they can get a full combo at Nandos for less.
 
Maybe it costs them more in oil, because they are about one nanometer thick and the surface area is just astronomical over a whole portion
