Many many businesses DEAD

I'm amazed they have managed to go on this long. They closed a branch here a few months back, but they have still got another 4 all within a mile or so of the city centre.

On further reading it looks like the story is a bit overblown on pizza express. Yeah they've got debt but they're still in profit, half the debt is just owed to the parent company and the rest is being paid.

It's like the mainstays of every awful city arcade and dropping - there's a Clintons and a two-floor Mothercare in Glasgow's St Enoch Centre and they're converting the chunk that was BHS into a cinema at the moment.

Clintons has been on my “HOW ARE THEY STILL GOING?” hit list for years. It’s literally cards and LOADS OF OLD TAT.

I don't get it either. Their cards aren't cheap, or nice. I'd never think of going to Clinton to buy a card.

I thought a few months ago how the whole anti-plastic thing is going to kill them- as they surely survive on helium balloons...

And just wait until the environmentalists realise how quickly we're running out of helium...

I actually think Clintons is fine for cards - certainly better than the fucking CARD FACTORY where the cards are printed on such cheap shitty paper they look like crap. Where else is there? Paperchase? Again how the fuck are they going? Scribbler? Well their cards are NICHE and certainly they're not gonna do for my mother, for example.

After I posted that I did think that my mother is about the only person i would consider buying a card in Clinton for. Nobody else (perhaps WHSmith?) sells the saccharine versed cards like they do. But for everyone else I can think of 5 or 6 other shops in the town centre alone I'd go first.

I've just been to PIZZA EXPRESS. There was me, Mr S and three staff. I've only been in Clintons once in the 21 years I've lived here and I rapidly left in DISGUST. At least Smiths sell SOME presentable cards.

I got my mums card in scribbler this year :D

THE BOOK PEOPLE goes into administration. Until I started working here 22 years ago I had no idea BOOK CLUBS were STILL A THING so how that's survived until now I have no idea. Alas that's one less CATALOGUE you can all spend the best part of three days PORING OVER. JUST ASK ME IF YOU WANT ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO FILL ALL YOUR FREE TIME

We get The Book People coming in every so often - last few times it's been all children's book and cookery books. Which is no use to me at all.

We still do as well. Or a version of it. All we get is an email from downstairs saying "The Books N Bits Man Has Been"

I can't think I've bothered taking a look in well over 10 years. I mean, WHO still bothers with this shit in an online world?

Recipe books and the like for me as well. Probably not for over a decade though.

I also used to be on their mailing list and get a catalogue every couple of months, but thinking about it haven't had one for a couple of years at least. No idea if they stopped doing them, or if I just fell off the list.

I got a bunch of books from my last employer and yes, they were pretty much all recipe books bar a book on World Flags, and the last time was probably around 7 years ago. Sometimes they had really good deals but it was a bit of an outdated concept, so I’m surprised they lasted so long!

Beales DEAD

I thought they were only a SOUTH COAST OPERATION but I see they also had branches in BIZARRE places like MANSFIELD, SKEGNESS and BECCLES

Did they have a place in Bournemouth? I seem to remember stumbling into a department store there I'd never heard of before.

Yes!

I used to like the one in the DOLPHIN CENTRE PREVIOUSLY KNOWN AS THE ARNDALE CENTRE in POOLE although I can't remember WHY

Maybe it was just the SHEER GLAMOUR

I remember thinking department stores were glamorous when I was young as well. It must be all that Are You Being Served?

Mind you, our branch of Lewis's had a ROOF GARDEN until the late 70s. Who wouldn't feel like an URBAN SOPHISTICATE? :disco:

Is Handmade Burger Co. established nationally?

Now dead, apparently. I recall going a few times in my student days before realising how over-priced it was for what it is.

I think we used to have one but I can't be sure. Loads of these "Burgers For Cunts" places opened about the same time and I'll be blowed if I can remember which was which.

Hardly surprising. I never once thought to myself "I'd quite like to look like a posh pair of curtains this weekend, wherever shall I shop?"
