You have to do that in Smiths tho' - I remember once going to be The Wire magazing in there - they had two copies, both of which had clearly been in a puddle. No ta.

Theft was RIFE in the high street music shops. When I worked part time in Virgin Megastore (99-02) even though the CDs all had those magnetic security boxes around them they still got nicked on a regular basis and they just legged it out of the store to get chased by security. The only things we had to keep behind the counter were games or we’d have been cleaned out by thieves on a regular basis.

I'd never buy CDs from either establishment because quite frankly I didn't want manky ones.

Even Sainsbury's were still doing this up to the early 2000s. They used to put a numbered sticker in the tray where the CD sits and anyone buying a CD or DVD with their shop would have to wait for a supervisor to be summoned to collect the precious disc from the cigarette kiosk. How quaint.

WH Smith used to have the worst price stickers on CDs that wouldn’t come off in one go. It was the main reason I didn’t buy from there.

Oh, that's not for no reason...that's when it has finally become an actual health and safety hazard. It's very rare anything gets done until someone goes base over apex.

yeah it wasn’t so bad at mine, but there was a bloke who would come in and lick the CDs, so the plastic keepers were very necessary.

He was some combination of deaf and blind too, and apparently the only way to hear us was by grasping our NECKS like he’s choking us one-handed, an experience I had to go through once when I was the only male staff member on my floor one night

Wow! I certainly never had to deal with anything that. I just remember a regular strange girl who was an obsessed Hear’Say fan coming to the counter quite often to discuss their music in detail. I honestly have no idea how she got so much traction out of them.

I have very fond memories of the John Menzies on Argyle Street. Bought my first album ever there and I have other memories of both their enormous book and music departments. I have an equally vivid memory of the record/cassette dept in the Menzies in the Mitchell arcade on Rutherglen Main Street, mainly because it was upstairs in its own wee alcove which made it feel like a shop within a shop - to my 9-10 year old mind, that made it seem all the more magical.
