Debenhams makes me sad. That's gonna tear a major hole out of our town centre.
 
I had no idea JD Sports came in as their saviour. Shops like Debenhams and Topshop closing whilst JD Sports and Sports Direct PROSPER. The mind boggles.

My friends whatsapp group is insisiting the big one in town used to have a cinema screen and would have birthdays upstairs but I don't remember this AT ALL. My birthdays were more likely to be held in the McDonalds.

The last time I bought something from Debenhams on their instore online ordering thing it had been cancelled and refunded by the time I actually left the shop.
 
Am only slightly upset about this as I hardly went there anyway apart from on that awful DRY BUN OCCASION

A good friend of mine has worked with Topshop/man for the last fifteen years more or less. Went from working on the shop floor to overseeing their (ill-fated) foray into the US. I really feel for him (though he's being quite philosophical about it all).

He's one the ones insisting he had a party in the Debenhams however. :kim:
 
I actually won’t miss Debenhams despite using them in the past. They had TOO MUCH stuff in a way. Whenever I would see an item I wanted to try, it would be an online exclusive and with clothes like dresses I want to actually try them on first.

Also the flagship Oxford Street store had the most rude people in the lingerie department. They would actively advertise their special lines, fitting service and amazing range of sizes, but would never actually stock them. You’d go up and ask if they carried a size and they’d just say “try the website”, which defeats the purpose of having the store.
 
New Look seem to have quite a few large stores locally, although nowhere near the size of Debenhams of course.
 
I think I relied on Debenhams for a quite a few things. That said my use has certainly declined in recent years.

I remember the day after the shops reopened, there were organised queues outside all the stores in the main town square. No one was was queuing for Debenhams. Bit book of stats, but I saw the death knell RIGHT THERE.
 
It really is the death of the high street. Terribly sad but natural progression as most find it a lot easier, cheaper and convenient to use the juggernaut that is the internet.
 
The whole notion of a department store is terribly dated anyway. The EVERYTHING UNDER ONE ROOF selling point has been kiled off by wonderful retail innovations such as Lakeside and Westfield where everything is of course under ONE ROOF with no risks to life and limb such as swarming bees and stampeding bulls :)

Is it just around here? I have been getting countless messages about make up, FAKE perfume, CHRISTMAS CRACKERS, and all manner of other CHEAP SHITE.

Yeah, a couple of my work colleagues are doing fake perfumes and scented "melts" (ie shit candles that you have to out in a SAUCER of some kind).
 
I am quite upset I shall have to wrap my own Christmas presents this year as the lady who usually does it for me has given up the ghost due to ARTHRITIC HANDS. :(
 
I'm down about Debenhams too but you could see last Christmas how badly they were doing. Everything was either super expensive of stocking-filler tat when what they used to be good for was the family members for whom you felt you had to make a bit more of an effort.

A shame.
 
This is a big one for Glasgow, the Debenhams in the city centre is HUGE and I can't even imagine what anyone will be able to do to fill that premises.

I didn't shop in there often but I did work there as a Christmas temp on two separate occasions (once on the shop floor and later in the stockroom) - both times they kept telling us that some would be kept on permanently, before summarily binning EVERYONE of course. Ho hum :eyes:

She was a GODSEND Octy. Once everything arrived I would just drop it off to her and pick it up beautifully wrapped and ready to drop off and stick under the tree.
 
I bet my mother is STILL sitting on a stash of Debenhams gift vouchers, despite me telling her for what feels like YEARS to get rid

It's not impossible. When I was really tiny we went to a cinema in Sheffield which you accessed through a department store.

Some people are amazing at wrapping presents. It doesn't matter how much care I take, mine still look like they were done by an octopus on LSD.

I was tempted to get into the PROFESSIONAL CHRISTMAS WRAPPING game as a seasonal sideline prior to Covid. I’m a whizz with the paper and ribbons etc.
 
I always put off wrapping till the very last minute which inevitably means I’ll do it PISSED AS A DUCK at midnight Christmas Eve, so my gifts look like they’ve been SHAT OUT.
 
There's so many HUGE Debenhams about that I can only imagine the buildings lying empty. Maybe some of them will become Primarks, but most places have one of them already.
 
The Debenhams in Glasgow is over the road from a big Primark.

No-one will be able to fill that building. It's 5 floors, 6 if you include the ground units which are let out to, among others, Topshop and HMV (and Barclays, oddly). So what happens to them? Are those units forced to close because that would finish HMV in Glasgow.
 
Our Primark could probably justify moving from the old BHS to the Debenhams building. It's much bigger and the current Primark is way too small for the town.
 
I used to employ family child labour to do my wrapping, but the only ones young enough not to want more than a tenner for the lot are horrid little shits, so fuck that.

I start off with good intentions, precise cuts, sharp folding and symmetrical tagging and taping, but to be honest by the time I'm wrapping the 31st Abba vinyl I've lost all interest and I no longer care if the pile looks like a pack of foxes have been through the food bins.
