Martine is in the news today claiming she's ready to return to music, which I'm sure will delight literally tens of gays. (Even I'm not that bothered).

But what do you think of her mega-selling but strangely forgotten chart topper? I suppose it was very much a - if you'll excuse the pun - moment in time. I doubt it would have been half as big if it wasn't for residual sympathy for being mown down by Mike Reid on Eastenders.



Obviously I'm Over You is her crowning glory, but we've discussed that at length before.

Serviceable. The material on the first album didn't live up to her status as the late 90s incarnation of Cheryl Cole.
 
I much prefer I've Got You to this. The album on the whole is pretty bland.

She felt quite dated even in her heyday though. The age of the Dina Carroll/Celine Dion-esque power-warbler was already on the decline by 1999.

Not that she had Celine's pipes anyway.
 
Probably my least fave single. I'm Over You was her pinnacle, On The Radio was fun enough for Europe and Love Me I adore for some unbeknown reason.

But the first two were rather average.
 
Love Me was a big favourite of mine until I discovered it was a cover. Now I only listen to the Yvonne Elliman version.

i can honestly say that this is one song that I have always loathed. I was hoping for a better music career from her.
 
Until Pure & Simple came out it was the most underwhelming mega smash of the time.
 
At the time I fucking LOVED IT. She was my favourite soap star and I was completely devastated when Frank ran her over! However, it's absolute garbage now. A 4 at best.
 
If she really does/did have ME, and if she does/did have a geniune mental health problem then I feel very sorry for her, as she's got such a poor reputation that no one's going to be inclined to help her with her comeback, even if there was a market for her.

Love Actually was released 10 years ago, and she was big enough (fame wise) to get her name on the poster, with almost all the actors in supporting roles having since established careers for themselves that surpassed Martine at her peak. Now she'd be lucky to be cast as the often talked about but never seen dead wife.

I think the nadir of her career is that ABORTION of a show Echo Beach. There's no coming back from that.
 
I wouldn't have compared Echo Beach to an abortion, more a heavy period after taking the morning after pill. It's not the first thing on anyone's CV but it didn't kill any careers that weren't already in the terminal stages. The youngsters aren't doing that badly for themselves, and the cast of Moving Wallpaper are doing very well.
 
Dull. And 'I'm Over You' is borderline unlistenable as well.

Anyone got the photo of Jonathan Pryce's face when she won the Olivier? :D
 
The British J-Lo, and only Geru has thrown up more iconic tragic pop star images than Martine barfing over the Simply Red guy and making a show of herself at an LA party drunkenly trying to land herself jobs and auditions (so the Holy Moly/Popbitch story went anyway). The song is nice, and as an actress it was assuming the Marilyn Monroe breathless talking voice that made her truly insufferable after a promising start with Milan and Bianca's common as muck BFF.
 
I think it's ace and I love how low key it was for a launch single. It's got an interesting structure and though she did better ("I'm Over You" and "I've Got You" both mawkishly tug at my heartstrings in different ways) this was a great start.

This has just reminded me that I've never invested in Musicality though... I do rather think it's best that I don't remedy that :D
 
Thank heavens for Martine's lucky earrings, otherwise her career would be well and truly over

I think poor Martine might have quietly retired her infamous 'Would Barbra Streisand do it?' rule for celebrity bookings in recent years. :(

It has to be said, I saw it earlier and my first thought was "oh how the mighty have fallen", rather than anything else. When you're in an ad with CHARITY "FUCKING" SHOP SUE and "THE MAN WHO INVENTED HUNSNET", you need to question your career decisions...
 
At least Charity Shop Sue generally seems to have come to NOTHING beyond a few GAYS who know no better. I was thinking only last week how she seems to have FUCKED OFF.
 
I'm surprised GG turned down the opportunity to co-star with Diane off the Traitors tbh. Blockbuster booking!

It was great on first watch back in 2019.

Then it was revealed it was all written by someone else, and she's actually painfully unfunny when left to her own devices. I don't know why they didn't just do a sec'hand series instead of her trying to go it alone because it's all been shit.
 
Has Martine not suffered enough indignities without her thread being derailed by CHARITY SHOP SUE DEBATE? :(

Also here for the Charity Shop Sue disdain. She's so far removed from the very specific and on-the-nose humour that originally made her great. The character's since dissolved into just "woman with accent turns up to things".

There's no way we'd now get through that exchange with Refund Grace without SHRIEKING, dancing, and cameos from Drag Race alumni.

Charity Shop Sue desperately needs a Shop
