Melodifestivalen 2021: Deltävling One

My friend there says that Danny is very disengaged and it feels like he knows he isn’t going to do particularly well. He hasn’t posted anything about it on Instagram, and he said he didn’t even know who else was in his heat :DAF:
 
I get the feeling Danny really is doing this for a quick buck/exposure in CoVID times? He more than alluded to it previously. The song sounds it and the performance looks it.
 
He's not that young anymore, we'll see what happens in the poll tonight after the family show, that will give us a good idea of what might happen tomorrow.

On the contrary. I've had a lot of time for Danny since his Idol days, love his first two albums and enjoyed his 2011-2012 stints at Mello. In The Club and Amazing were the emperor's new clothes but I appreciated the effort and unbridled ambition.

This? He shouldn't have bothered entering with it, truth be told.

It's been 10 years since his last MF, is he still that popular in Sweden to get votes only because of him? I mean, he's not a teenager that will instantly get the kids' vote, right? He doesn't deserve DTF or AC with that.

10 years ago he was one of the more popular post idol alumni and one of maybe a dozen with sustained success outside of that competition. Think of the likes of Agnes, Mans and Darin to give you some idea. Nowadays he's one of the biggest artists in Sweden and the only Mello competitor in last decade years who would be able to sell out Sweden's biggest arena just by his own name. He's almost Carola level of famous inside Sweden now :disco:
 
NAR: the last time the heat closer didn't qualify was Margaret - Tempo in 2019. The last time before that was Dr. Alban ft. Jessica Folcker - Around the World in 2014. So there's an idea of the scale of car crash we'll probably need to be seeing for Danny to not be top 4 :basil:
 
As a newbie to all this are artists quite pleased to get into AC, or is it considered kind of HUMILIATING? Also has anyone ever come through AC and won the whole thing?

Only once, in 2013, a lesbian.

For some artists that are tipped to win the whole thing or do very well, going to AC is a disgrace. Like Carola or Loreen, that returned after winning MF (and Loreen Eurovision too) and they went to AC because people just didn't want them to come back so soon. For others artists AC would be a dream come true and a fantastic result.

Robin Stjernberg won from Andra Chansen in 2013.

It really depends on your status and I don't feel like it's as "bad" or "humiliating" as it was a decade ago, also because 4 acts from AC qualify for the finals now as opposed to 2. But obviously, it depends on how big a name you are. For example, when Carola and Andreas Johnson entered as a duo in 2008 (after Carola won in 2006 and Johnsson came second the same year) and they only made Andra Chansen, it was an earthquake.

it depends who the artist is. If they sell records outside of the context of the contest then going to AC would be a disappointment - so Loreen and FO&O going to AC in 2017 was a shock and threw the contest more widely open.

then there are those that have good qualification records but who aren’t really considered to be potential overall winners - so Jessica Andersson and Arvingarna may have won before and also been finalists, but their journey to the final now is really the competition itself for them. The last two times she has entered Jessica has qualified directly to the final, and for her that has usually meant that an album would be released. Many acts have had their forthcoming projects pulled because of bombing badly in the contest, so getting to that final has meant album releases for our schlager faves because it shows there is interest.

However, they changed the rules of AC a few years ago that meant for some songs it’s an attractive prospect. You get to play your song one more time, and you only have to knock out one other song in a duel. The only act tomorrow for who that would be a disappointing scenario is Danny.

this was the start of the realisation that if you’re a more high profile act then you are likely to have more people voting AGAINST you, which doesn’t play well in a duel format. Being paired against a high profile act is great for an underdog narrative. I think if Danny goes to AC tomorrow then he won’t reach the final.

I’m still in recovery after Anton Hagman won the duel over Loreen in AC four years ago.

The drama. The chaotic energy. The soundbites from the artists who feel the Swedish people didn't "get" their performances. The bitterness. The joy. Really, it ticks all the right boxes in a good year. Much like a strong Housewives season.
