Good heat!

1 - Wiktoria - I think my very favourite thing that shows how much of a sneering dick that Crystal Ball account is was them describing this as a "Carly Rae Jepsen B-side" as if a. that was a bad thing, and as if b. Carly Rae didn't famously release an entire album of B-sides that happened to be one of the greatest albums of all time. That said, they're right - it does sound like a Carly Rae Jepsen B-side :disco: Half a chance our Wik's gonna have to slum it on the LONG COACH TO KIRUNA for andra chansen for this, but then, EVEN SANNA HAD TO back in the day - it keeps the national treasures KEEN

2 - Maria Sur - love this generic important cry for justice :disco: Sad that Suomi is dead and that I will be the only one taking up the mantle and staring wistfully out of a fighter jet window for this

3 - Panetoz - Anything this reminiscent of GREATEST SONG EVER WRITTEN Mina bränder by Anus dom demeanour ft. Xena (sp?) frankly CANNOT GO WRONG :disco:

4 - THEOZ - I sense this has even further to grow in full when I've heard more hooks than just the whistle and the California Girls/Good Time WHOA-WHOA-OH bit, our Theo gives GOOD SECOND VERSE

5 - Tennessee Tears - Love how IN THE SHALLOWS, THE SHALLOWS that opening is. Congrats to these two on their inevitable Radio 2 album of the week, can't wait to play this 37 times between now and May but never listen to it 😍

6 - Uje - it's cute but I don't care

7 - Eden - I was once told a factlet that when sloths are climbing, they sometimes climb so slowly that they forget the one limb they have holding the tree branch is the one that's supporting their entire bodies and start trying to move it too, falling to their deaths. Anyway that's the thought that came to mind when I was listening to this so do whatever you want with that information

The performance clips have just confirmed to me that Theoz and Panetoz really are light years ahead of everyone else this week. I can now imagine Biktopia qualifying, though, because it's as bland and insubstantial as Cazzi Opeia from last year, and everyone loved that for some reason.

I think the back story is obviously going to lift it, but I think the extent to which it's going to have every bleeding heart Swede grasping for their phone to shower her with app votes is being seriously overestimated.

If Felicia Olsson submitted that song, it'd be dead last with a bullet.

It's quite an interesting strategy on Theoz's part to stay in Swedish, because I do think it either consciously or unconsciously communicates "I'm not here to win", which, given the route everyone normally takes with their second entry, means I think he's potentially due to hold onto that chip for a while yet

I think I'll watch at least the song section of this (and the interval act that they've been trailing) before looking further afield.

I have skipped the clips for this heat so I am sure everything will be very fresh and exciting tonight...

Looking forward to see an elevated Theoz, and I have high hopes that Wiktoria doing a CRJ b-side will mean that she takes the vocal down a notch or two.

I've skipped the clips too. And I know all the reviews say it's massively underwhelming and basic, but I have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to love Maria's song.

Me three on the going in blind- not had chance. But will be watching tonight :disco:

This heat sounds like a step up on last week. There's a pretty obvious top 4. Not sure why they keep bothering to select songs like Comfortable and Grytan, which are DOA.

Well, Grytan is the only contribution to this years edition that is not written by a songwriting crew and performed by an established artist outside of the Melfest bubble. I totally understand the reasoning behind Karin handpicking it.

MF really needs to rethink the selection and staging if slow songs like Comfortable, they almost never work in this context.

I think it's always been that way though. Most of those low-fi entries go nowhere - Julia Alvgard, Elinore Holmer, Pernilla Andersson etc. But every now and again you get a Caroline Af Ugglas or a Clara Klingenström who really captures the public's imagination.

I do think they need to balance out the songwriting camp entries a bit though, as it is starting to feel a wee bit stale.

I think it's fundamentally a good thing that Melfest makes an effort to cater to everyone, and it's probably the only way it remains a national institution. I think my main nitpicks at the moment are, as VoR says, a slight overreliance on a couple of writers and an aversion to self-penned stuff. Collaborations are often for the better, but it does feel like there is essentially a veto at the moment on self-written entries, which feel like the sort of thing that will often be a bit underwhelming, but would also every now and then throw up a compelling curveball.

My other main gripe is that it feels like the staging and camerawork has been set back by about a decade ever since Christer went to the US and took a lot of the talent with him, when Melfest was throwing up some really interesting, creative stuff in that regard up until 2021 - especially when it feels like we're moving into an era where there's going to be a lot more creativity on those lines at the big Eurovision stage. Cornelia's camerawork was great (in Stockholm anyway), but the rest of the year didn't really match up to it at all.

Staging wise, I think the issue is that very few of the artists have significant major-label backing, so their stage shows are essentially self-funded. Last week virtually everybody was just standing there on stage with nothing to hook the eye.
