Melodifestivalen 2023 GOSSIP OCH BITCHING THREAD

While she won't (and probably shouldn't!) stand a chance, I'm only here for Carola if she goes BALLS TO THE WALL with a full on disco STOMPER and loads of cash is thrown at it for a PROPER show. Like Perrelli managed (admittedly on a smaller budget).

I WON'T STAND FOR A BALLAD.

I’d settle for anything more stompery “One Love”.

The list so far is pretty good, only Emil is completely left field but he's supposed to be more of a joke act. We only need 2 heavy hitters and we're good!

50's/60's
1959 Siw Malmkvist - Unlikely but still touring. Was considering a Mello comeback 5 years ago as part of a trio with AL Hansson
1959 Brita Borg - Dead
1960 Östen Warnerbring/Inger Berggren - Both dead
1961 Siw Malmkvist/Gunnar Wiklund - Gunnar dead
1961 Lill-Babs - Dead
1962 Inger Berggren/Lily Berglund - Both dead

1963 Monica Zetterlund/Carli Tornehave - Zetterlund dead. Carlii is still touring but is not a big name anymore, it's unlikely SVT would want him
1965 Ingvar Wixell/Absent Friends - Dead
1966 Lill Lindfors & Svante Thuresson - Svante dead. SVT doesn't want Lill L after her latest fiasco
1967 Östen Warnerbring - Dead
1968 Claes-Göran Hederström
- Sent in a song 2 years ago, wasn't selected
1969 Tommy Körberg - Likely to come back at some point
Claes-Göran Hederström - Dead
We can cross him off the list of potential returnees.

Prepare for a tribute act in SF 3.

2. Caroline af Ugglas - The most wealthy female singer in Sweden (she's among Sweden's top 100 riches nobility) always has a lot of projects going on. If she sends in something decent she's sure to be selected.
3. Yohio - SVT would love to have him as he’s still very relevant in Sweden, is seen regularly on TV and has improved his live vocals considerably since 2014. Mello has not been a priority of his however as he’s been more focused on the Japanese market. His last Mello participation was also forced on him by his label and he’s strongly at odds with the SVT preselection process (basically SVT doesn’t allow him to write his entries himself as they strongly prefer collaborations). Despite this Yohio is not ruling out participating again as he likes the visual creative process.

4. Pernilla W - A BIG name in Sweden but it's difficult to match her up with a good relevant song and she doesn't seem interested in competing any more anyways. Likely to be used as a filler interval act instead.
5. David L - SVT prefers bigger names in this category but not out of the question if SVT has something male up-tempo that requires a strong singer. Has a TV presenter gig with Petra Mede and TV4 which might stand in the way of a Mello participation.
6. M Feiner - He's not a big name in Sweden and got a stable international DJ career so Mello is probably not a priority, but SVT was happy with his participation last time and if they want a live instrument on stage he could be a go to.
7. Sean Banan - was caught with cocaine so SVT is reluctant to include him and risk media backlash. But it has been a number of years since the incident so perhaps it's water under the bridge by now. Sean regularly send in songs so he's clearly been going for another participation. Much like Panetoz in the next segment he's a hard worker that draws in crowds and has a healthy touring schedule. It's the kind of artist that SVT should want.

2014
1. Oscar Zia - Has become folkkär. SVT sees a potential winner and would love to have him but the last few years he's not been interested in competing. Is releasing new music but it might be difficult translating his current content to the Mello/ESC stage.

I would say "NOT PAUL REY AGAIN" -

But he did co-write song of the decade "I Can't Get Enough" so that's got to count for SOMETHING. Watch him return with some Ed Sheeran b-side. :(

Personally, I've got my CUNTLIPS CROSSED he'll be coming back in FULL Cazzi Opeia mode, having clearly discovered anal in good time ahead of cowriting I Can't Get Enough :disco:

2015

Magnus Carlsson - SVT has wanted him back before with a classical Swedish schlager. Last time Magnus was roumored he turned down SVTs offer as he wanted to compete with something more modern in the English language.

Isa - SVT would love for her to come back but she really got burnt last time around. Although she's back to writing) producing and had been singing backing vocals and coaching Malou Prydz it seems that mentally she hasn’t worked through her previous burnout.

Linus Svenning - Not a priority for SVT but not impossible. Has been reasonably close to making the cut again.

Dolly Style - Still flogging children but hasn’t recovered since the media backlash of 2019 when a documentary revealed how the singers are controlled and treated as very expendable by the management without getting sufficient compensation. SVT doesn’t want to be seen as an evil big corporation using young girls for profit.

2016

Molly Sandén - SVT wants her but as one of Sweden’s biggest artists she doesn’t need it. Wants to go to ESC but doesn’t like competing and is too afraid to take the risk of flopping.

Panetoz - Still touring and even though they haven’t had a hit since their last participation they’re still very much a recognizable act which draws in large crowds for live performances. Confirmed by Aftonbladet.

SaRaha
- Why not? And call in SuRie for a feature and/or backup singing duties.

Molly Pettersson Hammar - Hungers for it. Has been singing on demos and would scarf down any number of water bottles required for her to be selected again. Might've squeaked by through jury selection any random year but now that she's got a Swedish No 1 on radio her outlook is far better :disco: expect her to sing in Swedish if selected.

Anna Book - If SVT needs some tabloid filler. Has been deemed as hard to work when it comes to lesser productions but I don’t imagine her putting up many demands if let back onto the main stage.

Victor Crone confirmed. They're really bringing back all the greats this year. :eyes:

Also two relatively unknown young female performers. Maria Sur, who is a protege of Sarah Dawn Finer, and Ida-Lova Lind, who is the daughter of comedienne Christine Meltzer.

Maria Sur is also a Ukrainian refuge, and was competing on The Voice until the war broke out

This is shaping up to be a weak line up. Are they being selected so Anders Bagge has a clear run this time?

Anyway, so far Aftonbladet has named 15/28. Notable lack of the old guard so far, hopefully there's a boiler or two still to come.

  1. Nordman
  2. Wiktoria
  3. Loulou LaMotte
  4. Marcus & Martinus
  5. Theoz
  6. Emil Henrohn
  7. Panetoz
  8. Smash into pieces
  9. Melanie Wehbe
  10. Paul Rey
  11. Elov & Beny
  12. Tennessee Tears
  13. Maria Sur
  14. Ida-Lova
  15. Victor Crone

Warner is angling for SVT to give Maria Sur, a Ukrainian citizen living Sweden, a spot.

No mentions on SVT's intentions so far.

Yes, she was mentioned back on the second page. I believe it originally was Skanderna over at Escforum who found out about her. She's a force to be reckoned with and probably as close to a powered up version of Hanna Ferm's Nerglish as we ever gonna get.

Some backstory:
She participated in Ukraine's The Voice and was one of the favourites before fleeing to Sweden in the wake of the Russian special operation. There she started contacting various Swedish singing celebrities on Instagram to no avail. That was until Sarah Dawn Finer, daughter and now holy shepherdess of Swedish immigrants, answered her and got her into a national benefit concert for Ukraine.

Now watch her butcher Helena Paparizou's 2014 gem:

I can see the appeal of having Bagge back for 'revenge' as a Melfest narrative, but they must know he'd bomb at Eurovision so I don't see the logic at all in deliberately tanking this year to ensure he wins.

A big part of Bagge's national appeal this year was the conclusion of a 10 year storyline about him not daring to sing on stage and therefore missing out of singing a duet with Celine Dion.

Don't except him to net as much of a sympathy vote now that he's an established live performer in Sweden.

I think he might very well participate again though. SVT must've noticed the significant bump in viewership during his deltävling so they would want him back for sure.

I'd be intrigued to see how well Bagge lends himself to a revenge narrative. So far he's been the Swedish answer to Winnie-the-Pooh.

This year feels strange so far. No real big names, a bunch of middling artists and some unknowns.

Maria Sur could be one to watch. If she gets a good song, don't count her out on winning. The Swedes like a backstory - Bagge, Tusse - and it would be a perfect narrative to send a Ukrainian refugee to a contest which can't be held in Ukraine due to the war. Plus both flags are the same colours, so she could be representing both countries at the same time!

I'm fairly hopeful about this line-up already. Wiktoria and Marcus & Martinus have opted not to enter a few years already and so they should have very strong packages to partake now. Maria is a complete hit or miss, but I'd expect her to be an artist for whom SVT would try their hardest to find a suitable song for.

Paul Rey should also be more competitive this year as last time he was picked with an unfinished song and his girlfriend in labour. SVT selected him then because of how the personal narrative of the song was connected to his newborn.

2017:
Ace Wilder - Has been living under a rock since her shameful exit on Stjärnornas Stjärna. Contrary to what one might expect she’s considered a hard worker off camera and seemes beloved by her coworkers, has also been involved in backstage production at Melodifestivalen. Not sure she has enough label support for another competitive run.

Axel Schylström - Has a fan base and has been close to making the cut in recent years.
Boris René - Still releasing but doesn’t have much of a fan base

Owe Thörnqvist - Still touring and would love to compete again to set a new record. Not sure SVT could stand another jab of his constant smugness.

2018:
Samir &/or Viktor - Pretty much cannot stand each other while touring. Most accounts say that Viktor was the one who was hard to work with. Might be seen in other constellations although Samir has segwayed more into hosting while Viktor’s gone back to his blogging roots. Samir was until recently tied down to the rival channel TV4 but is now “focusing 100% on his studies to become a brokerage agent”. I wouldn’t be surprised if he u-turns up as a co-host for a future edition of Melodifestivalen.

Renaida - Has kept herself relevant enough as a musical artist and cancer patient. Mello-executives don't like her and have kept her out of contention since the in-ear fiasco.
