Melodifestivalen 2023: The Final - Stockholm

I haven't been able to put it into words myself but "low-level cult leader" is excactly the vibe she's giving off.

It's like the random mini-boss you encounter half way through an early level dungeon in a retro Nintendo game. Nearing the end it'll be recycled with a new color palette to be encountered in the wild, often charging straight at you and flanked by smaller goons for extra protection. If unfocused you might bid farewell to a heart or two, but by this point your focus should really be on frying the bigger fish.

Just met LouLou :disco:

She wasn’t performing, she’s just come for the piss up. She was lovely and couldn’t believe British people liked her song because it was in Swedish. I told her it had been a big hit in the UK which I’m sure will delight her until she gets home and checks the chart stats.

One Day is comfortably my third favourite Mariette entry, but I do feel she's in a bit of a holding pattern of making music that wouldn't sound out of place of Contemporary Christian Radio. Essentially she's becoming the female David Lindgren. :(
 
Also I have fond memories of my only meeting with Dame Shirley Clamp at the 2016 Eurovision after-party in Stockholm.

Me: "Hi Shirley! I don't want to bother you, but I just wanted to say that your debut album was the first Swedish language album I ever bought and it's what made me fall in love with Swedish music. It's still one of my faves. So, thank you!"

Her: Man... I am SO DRUNK.

Oh GOD it’s like the night I blundered up to Louise in Soho House (after Heavy Love had just debuted at a frustrating #11). Except I was drunk.

She's such a competent performer that I have a feeling she'll eventually just Sanna Nielsen her way to a win through sheer quantity.

I feel like the ship has sailed really. Sanna was 29 when she won, wheras Mariette is already 40. Plus Sanna was consistently a televote favourite before her win, whereas Mariette tends to do well in her heats and then tank in the finals. Hard to imagine a year when Sweden gets really excited about her.

Also I get the impression that Sanna was much more widely known/liked by the Swedish public in general, who had kind of grown up with her? Does Mariette have much of a profile outside Melfest?

I think they were both in a similair position, generally well known and well liked but strongly associated with Mellodifestivalen. Mariette has done a lot of other stuff and is much better known to the general public than say Dotter or Wiktoria. A feaure with Linda B about why that's the case is coming up :disco:

I believe seasonal rot only really sets in for an artists when their entries are just average or good, especially compared to their previous efforts. Mariette is much more mainstream than Sanna so when she joins the final and there's three stronger acts in the same genre then of course she's gonna suffer.

If she ever comes to the finals with the best overall package I can't see the Swedes turning her down.
