Full list of nominees - Charli surprisingly IN, Jessie NOT, and somebody called Nadine Shah has had a complete meltdown on Twitter about not being nominated.

Georgia's album was just singles and filler so I guess she's there purely based on momentum/hype. From the boys I wouldn't mind a Michael Kiwanuka win, but of course I'm going to gun for our map-terrorist Instabaddie Dua :disco:

I reckon Stormzy will win.

I've heard 4 out of these albums. None are particularly sensational. And yes that includes Dua's.

The FKA Twigs SNUB is the headline for me - that tatty Georgia album over modern British classic Magdalene..? REALLY?!

Anyway, the genuinely incredible Kiwanuka to win, or I will accept Laura Marling as a sort of LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT despite her only just being 30

Michael Kiwanuka is marvellous but love Anna Meredith too, chuffed for her.

And I won't hear a WORD against QUEEN Nadine Shah! Although her tweets have gone so I can't see what she said.

She absolutely went OFF and said the music industry is a bunch of cunts and FUCK YOU for nominating the 1975 over me - they weren't even nominated :D

Yeah I liked some of here earlier stuff to, Holiday Destination was a banger, but recent stuffs a bit meh

I think Nadine is still sore about losing to Wolf Alice a couple of years ago, when she was the bookies fave and the album (Holiday Destination) would have been a deserving winner.

Her new album Kitchen Sink is just WHATEVER though, and hardly a massive absence.

I know right. Magdalene is a msterpiece.

Not heard that yet! I'm only familiar with Once I Was an Angle (which is great) - I need to investigate her work more. Amazon had a glitch where her vinyl was priced and shipped out at only £9.99 and I should have ordered it then

SAME tbh! I've always wanted to like Laura Marling more than I do...nothing of hers ever seems to stick with me. Songs For Our Daughter is really lovely on the times I've listened to it, but I forget it as soon as it's been on. Fortune off SFOD was my fave I think.

I do see Laura Marling as some sort of British equivalent to Joni Mitchell though, so i probably should invest some time into her properly one day :D

Also on Nadine Shah - she was probably relying on a Mercury nod to help shift some vinyl/tour tickets (pre c-19), and it must sting to see artists like Dua and Charli nominated who absolutely don't need the nomination get it.

Of course she isn't entitled to a nomination at all, however I wouldn't be surprised if "Mercury nom" was legitimately written into her marketing plan :D

I actually agree with Nadine Shah’s point and I like her and her new album is definitely a good one worthy of inclusion. Does Dua Lipa who has a record company machine behind her need a nomination for this (as much as I like her album)? She’s going to get her 4 Brits and a performance to plug her deluxe deluxe deluxe edition which will be out by then.

UNFAIR!

(TBH I'm not too sure if she would have been nominated regardless however. Georgia's label clearly ENSURED her album was nominated, and that would have been the slot given to Rina or Twigs otherwise I'd imagine)

The FABULOUS Michael Kiwanuka album WINS!
WELL WORTH a listen if you haven't bothered - I'd advise to skip tracks one and two (I think they were the more radio-sounding singles) and fully immerse yourself into the cohesive and faintly UNDERWATER-sounding, very mildly disco influenced rest of album :disco: QUEEN!

Laura Marling found FUMING! I honestly thought they might do an AS4 and crown both Kiwanuka and Marling this year. They both deserved it.

FKA Twigs of course found fuming EVEN MORE, but also cashing her latest cheque from whatever google LINK UP she's doing this month.

YES! The first two tracks have never clicked but the rest is quite sublime.

I bet the stores are thrilled that the winner is the album they've been trying to flog off the overstock CDs at £3 a pop for the last 2 months. Hasty repricing ahoy!

Poor choice, I think. I don;t have anything against him as such but it's a very "Mercury" choice. No-one will go "lol whut?" but when people look at the list in 10 years time, they'll be like "they picked THAT ALBUM????"

RESPECTFULLY I don't agree with this at all :D

I think out of all of the recent Mercury Prize winners, KIWANUKA is the album most likely to still be listened to in 50 years time. I think it's a world class future classic. And his live show is PHENOMENAL!

Looking at the last decade, Alt-J and Sampha are the real WTF winners for me - closely followed by Benjamin Clementine who I have never ever enjoyed musically.

50 years? Look, I went for 10 because that's a servicable timeframe. In 50 years time, all recorded music will have been fried due to the heat death of the planet and songs will only exist within oral traditions.

And Laura Marling still won't have won.

I like the Kiwanuka album very much. Pleased he won, though there didn't seem as much buzz around him as with the last album and it was down to a fiver almost immediately.

Kiwanuka looking at a nice little Mercury bounce this week - up to 2 in the mids, should shift a good 8-10k. which tracks should I try @FetchFugly?

After the win I saw that all his albums were right up on the Amazon chart.

I would probably go with Piano Joint (This Kind of Love), Hero, Hard to Say Goodbye and Final Days.

I swear if Kiwanuka had more fame and more international coverage, this album would certainly be remembered for a long time. It's up there with Marvin Gaye, Public Enemy and Lauryn Hill as a landmark black music album.
