Famous for an anagram of his name being "shady wanker".
He was actually an important figure in the 80s - he did an awful lot to puncture the white Western concept of "world music" by making it clear that the music he was playing was from a city, in a country on a continent and would bristle when anyone talked about "African music" as if the entire continent has a single sound. He was however, a bad tempered, volatile sod to an extent only matched by his truly awful sister.
His final radio venture was basically a podcast from his kitchen but bands would come in and do sessions anyway. Says something I guess.
On balance, RIP.
