It's a Scottish thing. Hogmanay was the bigger deal in Scotland between that and Christmas for many years with New Year being the 'big meal' rather than Christmas Day. If you look back at TV schedules from the 80s, New Year's Eve isn't much a thing in England.

Just popped down to Co-op for no reason other than to get a bit of air after being inside for about 48 hours.

There's still a flood alert on the Lower Bristol Avon, so I thought I'd see what the river is currently looking like.

That's from the river bank on my side. I've seen the river burst its banks onto the footpath in front of those houses perhaps twice in the 20 or so years since they were built. Usually I'd say the level is about a metre lower than it is currently. But I've never seen the river flowing so fast. And there's already a yellow weather warning for rain from 5pm this evening until 5pm tomorrow. And then not a dry day at all forecast until Sunday.

Beginning to get a little concerned...

We're about 30/40m or so back from the river. But the development is higher on our side and slopes up to my house. I walked down a path and a lot of steps to take that photo. I'd say our house is pretty much at the level of the top of those three storey flats, so it would need to rise a LOT to threaten my home, I think.

The alert map on gov.uk shows those houses I've photographed in the flood zone, but not my road. Looks like we could be potentially cut off by road if it does flood as the development on my side is a huge cul-de-sac and is lower at the other end. But I can't really complain about that if other people's homes are genuinely at risk.

The steak pie was a TRIUMPH if I do say so myself. Has to be puff pastry and wholly cascade and surround the meat base. The soggy pastry from the meat juices/gravy is definitely my favourite part.
