I'm currently assigning ringtones to my contacts. On my Android Sony phone I did this by clicking on the contact and assigning the ringtone from the SD card. On the iPhone I have to find the original song mp3 in my laptop, open it in iTunes, crop it to 30 seconds or less, convert it to AAC, send it to Windows Explorer, change the file extension, cut and paste it into the phone with iTunes.

I've been at it an hour and I've done two already

Haha, WHY?

Mainly because I know who's ringing without looking at the phone when I'm in the car. I refuse to connect my phone to the car on short daily trips and this way I can easily tell by the tune coming from my handbag whether I should pull over and answer it or not. Besides who wouldn't want the theme tune to Fraggle Rock assigned to them?!
