Welcome to the first edition of Moopy album club!

To reiterate, here are the rules of Moopy album club.

  • Listen to the album
  • Review the album (It doesn't have to be an essay or anything, just post your thoughts in any format you see fit)
  • Give the album a mark out of ten on the poll
  • That's it!
The first album we're going to listen to is Lady Wood by Tove Lo.

Lady Wood was released in 2016 and is the second studio album by Swedish singer-songwriter Lo. The lead single 'Cool Girl' peaked at #46 in the UK and #84 in the USA. Prior to this album, Lo's hit singles included Habits (#3 USA, #6 UK), Talking Body (#12 US, #17 UK) and Heroes with Alesso (#31 US, #6 UK).

You can post your review at any time. Let's aim for a weekly cycle at first and if people need more time then we can revisit.

Great choice, I've also been meaning to give it a listen after Cool Girl and True Disaster growing on me.
 
Are we reviewing after one listen? Or a couple?
 
So by next Friday we should have all given our reviews/comments? And next Friday we get album #2? :disco:
 
I'll take a listen at some point over the weekend.

Are we randomising the choice for next week or just going down the list? I'm conscious of avoiding the simmering underlying resentment, personal attacks and burnt bridges of the Moopy book club.
 
I would suggest that everybody who successfully participates this week (i.e. by reviewing and rating the album by next Friday) be entered into a basic randomizer to select the next 'host'.

People who miss the Friday deadline can still rate this album and be part of it, but they forfeit their chance to pick an album the next week.

It seems the fairest way, and encourages people to get involved.

I've had my first listen and will go in for a second later on the proper amp & speakers.
 
It's very LAP. So this bitch is Swedish then and writes for Ellie Goulding.

I'm going in after a couple of listens, because I'll probably forget otherwise.

Not going to lie, I approached this with trepidation, recoiling in masc4masc horror at the prospect of 39 minutes of endless Swedish pop.

Mindful of my reputation, I locked myself away in the office and began listening while working. I wasn't paying full attention, but it didn't offend me. A good first test.

This afternoon, I've given it a whirl on 'proper' speakers and an amp. The first few tracks weren't my usual cup of tea and I started to pull faces. The middle third of the album was OK and the last third I really enjoyed. I quite liked Keep it Simple and WTF.

A little poppy for my normal taste but certainly not chart shit. Probably more one for Ms Ron but I didn't hate it. I think a 7 is fair for me.

My initial response was that it is too laid back to listen to at work. I will try again this evening or tomorrow morning.

One track stood out but I don't have the track listing to hand.
 
I have Tove Lo's last album which I thought was excellent so my expectations were reasonably high for this. And honestly, I'm disappointed. The production is rather good and I get that it's going for a somewhat chilled vibe but I found most of it the wrong side of mellow and slips into just flat out unmemorable. The one takeaway from it for me is 'True Disaster' which was very good. Objectively I concede it is well made but it's just not really to my taste.

Overall I'd give it a 6. Competent but unspectacular.
 
It is rather samey. That's not to say it's bad.

I will give it a second spin for sure.
 
I ticked no in the poll thread because I know I won't do it every week; if there's an album I'm not interested in, I simply won't bother, or at best will end up skipping through tracks. And I sure as hell won't write a review.

HOWEVER, I then remembered that had I bothered with ameraal's Christine and the Queens thread when he originally posted it, I'd have been enjoying her for over a year before I finally was exposed to her. So I ought to make a bit of an effort, perhaps.

This one slightly appeals, and I'm off out for a walk later, so it can be my soundtrack.
 
When I say 'write a review', it really doesn't necessarily need to be more than the responses you'd post in a general music thread about a new song/album you've heard.

Obviously if people want to write more that's fantastic, but I don't want the reviewing element to become a barrier to entry. If a sentence or two is all you have in you, that's absolutely fine.
 
I've listened twice. Once at work and once having a lay in this morning.

I had no expectations, aside from VoR hype which, no offence, isn't a guaranteed winning sales pitch for me. As a result, my sense of being underwhelmed, was underwhelming. It really is just there for me. The contemporary pop production is one element I don't like, however with so much modern pop, I grit my teeth and sit through it in the hope I find something decent underneath the layers of lethargy. A few of the songs, applied to better production that appeals to my pop sensibilities would have taken the whole affair into more interesting territory. It was total background for my lay in, but had to switch off at work. It could have been quite good, instead it mostly wandered down a series of uninviting paths.

Standout moments: Influence and Imaginary Friend
Lowlights: The production and seemingly unnecessary profanities.

I can't stand all the unnecessary fucking either. It's bizarre that it's entered mainstream music in the way that it has. What next? CUNT?

I have however splashed out a whopping FIVE POUNDS on this for review purposes
 
Shame she didn't whip out a cock to distract from this drivel.
