MOOPY ALBUM SYNC LISTENS #2 - DAVID BOWIE - HUNKY DORY - 8PM THURSDAY 16/04

You can hear the start of some of the more glam things that he was going to try later in the seventies on this. You have to like such a fun song with largely spoken lyrics.
 
The seeds of Ziggy are audible here. And, really, only here - it really is the only track that sets up the albums that would make him famous.
 
I haven't the slightest clue what "The Bewley Brothers" is about. But it's a mighty fine listen.

It it is certainly not lyrically completely transparent. But, yes, very interesting listening.
 
It's a funny album, taken as a whole. It's not coherent but the high points are so high that this probably gets elided, glossed over.
 
So, it looks like Moopy doesn't want to get pushed too far out of the ol' comfort zone!

I'll try Blackout and The Visitors next week and take it from there.
 
It's a very brave album from an artist who was very much yet to become 'David Bowie'. There are quite a number of places where you could hear him trying out things that he would go into much more detail with later on. Queen Bitch was probably my favourite of the tracks I didn't know. Quicksand and The Bewley Brothers were enjoyable but probably a bit lyrically dense/incomprehensible for a casual listen.
 
The same is true of his previous albums - they're all quite scattershot, like he's casting around for a direction. He was very much still forming and he could have picked up a number of possible directions from Hunky Dory.

I probably won't bother with Blackout but I'm very here for The Visitors.

I've been giving some thought as to what might work for moopy and would suggest Garbage - Version 2.0, Erasure - Chorus and Arcade Fire - Funeral for future listens.
 
Thank you for organising these anyway. It's already getting me to listen to some classic albums that I probably wouldn't have done otherwise and that's always worthwhile.
 
I wouldn't have picked Blackout but there were 2 independent suggestions for it. They're all good suggestions as well, Erasure and Garbage definitely have a Moopy audience. Not sure if Thursday is a good day for it tho'.
 
Hunky Dory was one of the first albums that got me into Bowie. It's eerie, charming and has all the small components right at the start of his career that may be interpreted as a harbinger of what was to come. I still wouldn't have thought Ziggy Stardust was around the corner but some of the signs are there. The songwriting is top notch as well. It's probably up there in my top 10 Bowie albums and one of my pre-Berlin trilogy favourites. The Lauren Baccall cover is also :disco:

I was actually listening to this while cooking dinner, not a Bowie fan but not bad. I love Changes.

I haven't set a foot in a supermarket in over a month. I go to M&S at the hospital but it's pretty empty nowadays and we get the rest of the stuff online..
