Fresh from their success on the Moopy 100 Albums list 2011, here comes an act we don't discuss too much anymore but appear to have lots of fans...

I love them though I hardly ever play their albums

Lovely lovely voice from Nina, wish they would record less with guitars (Though "gran turismo" is probably their best album for me, it fits perfectly into the Garbage/Smashing Pumpkins electro-guitar- radio stuff from the late 90s)

My favourite song is probably "love fool" which despite sometimes giving loads of people the wrong illusion that they are a one hit wonder, is one fine perfectly crafted piece of pop music.

Long Gone Before Daylight is in my top 5 albums ever ever ever.

Funky have you ever given it a go? I'm sure I've urged you to in the past. If you like Sheryl's Wildflower I can't see you not warming to it.

Alex (or it might have been pickle) actually introduced me to Communication many years ago, and I adore it. But I've never bothered with the full album. I've heard the Sheryl Crow comparisons before. I really should give it a go shouldn't I?

I just never really cared for them. I like the singles from Gran Turismo like the next Mr Casual, but never had the need to invest heavily. Is this album quite different then?

VASTLY. I like Gran Turismo but they completely changed direction with Long Gone Before Daylight, it's all really low-key and acousticy.

Two of my other favourite tracks. Nina's voice is just SO beautiful.

okay I'll definitely add it to my list with Shakespeare's Sister and a few other things I plan on going back and checking out.

I'm really getting into my 90s again lately...

Long Gone Before Daylight is my favourite album of theirs, but i also really really liked Super Extra Gravity. how was that one received?

I like it, but not as much as the two albums that precede it. A fair chunk of it doesn't really grab me.

Don't Blame Your Daughter is up there with the very best tracks from Long Gone Before Daylight though.

I'll be giving this one a miss.

I have little-to-no interest in them, which is really quite remarkable for a Swedish act.
 
I love Good Morning Joan from SEG. i think it's a bonus track too.

on LGBD it's all about For What It's Worth for me. :disco:

I'll add to the love for Long Gone Before Daylight, especially Communication and Lead Me Into The Night.

Oh God "Long Gone Before Daylight" is hands down my favourite record ever. every[/] song individually stabs me right there *points to right of chest* and yet cohesively the album works as well, with no song outdoing any other. I think it helps that I first fell in love with this album in the setting it was probably recorded - staying up all night in the middle of a secluded Swedish forest, sometimes alone and sometimes with friends, but always with the comfort of fireflies, long gone before daylight.

I agree almost 100% (except for the Swedish forest thing) but I do think Good Horse sticks out a little bit. I tend to skip it. It's the ONLY weak link though.
 
"Long Gone Before Daylight" is also in my top 5 albums ever (REMEMBER EVERYONE THAT VoR HAS ONLY EVER COPIED ME) and it always shows its true melancholy charms as winter draws in. It's utterly astonishingly beautiful- recently voted in NME's "Top 100 Lost Albums Ever" (one of the very few there that I actually own from that list)

The A Camp albums are very strong as well, particularly the second one.
 
Yeah I agree about "Good Horse" but even that is fine as an album track (it also doesn't help that it's sandwiched between 10/10 tracks). "For What It's Worth" and "Communication" are definitely the best moments though. This thread has inspired me to put the album on before bed tonight

Other than LGBD I have not ventured into any of their studio albums, just the Best Of or GH. Do any come close?

Gran Turismo is a great album as well. The singles are the main 10/10 moments, but there isn't really a weak track on there.

Gran Turismo and Super Extra Gravity certainly have enough good stuff to merit investigation. It's just that LGBD is a career-defining achievement.

There was a poll to find their best song on Swedish radio, and Communication won by miles even though it had never been a single anywhere in the world. It's THAT good.
 
I had liked the odd single but only fully came on board from the 'Gran Turismo' album onwards. I also love the A Camp albums, most people prefer the first one ( 'Algebra' is such a gorgeous song ) but the second one, 'Colonia', is really wonderful

"Colonia" is actually better than "Super Extra Gravity" and "Gran Turismo" in my Cardigans list. I love the first album too ("The Oddness of the Lord" being my choice cut) but the second really just feels like a continuation of the Cardigans' previous two albums...

I've been in a VERY DOWN PLACE this week for NO APPARENT REASON. I'm going to be playing the FUCK out of this tonight now I've thought about it
 
I swear to God no other act I can think of as got it so spot on for me lyrically. I think "I Need Some Fine Wine..." encapsulates every serious romantic relationship I've had :D
 
Just a QUICK point. I often miss these threads because of the way they're set up. On my screen I get in the "New Posts" function: "MOOPY ARTIST OF THE WEEK (10.10.11)- THE". Worth doing it the other way around so I actually get excited rather than just scanning through and ignoring as I often have (and sure others do) ?
 
This isn't meant to sound condescending to non native English speakers but I find it kind of amazing that a Swedish singer can write far more affecting and emotionally astute lyrics than 99% of English language writers.

I adore The Cardigans - well, post-Gran Turismo, anyway. Super Extra Gravity and Long Gone are ESSENTIAL albums. My top 10:

10. Overload - a lovely little waltz. I can totally see Nina with a glass of red in one hand staggering drunkenly around the dancefloor.
9. Please Sister - a cheeky little song, quite commercial sounding for them really.
8. You're The Storm - took me a bit of time to get into this one but now I LOVE it.
7. Marvel Hill - the synths and bells on this are fabulous.
6. Drip Drop Teardrop - I've always loved the rawness of this one.
5. Couldn't Care Less - this really relaxes me and it's so sad and atmospheric.
4. My Favourite Game
3. I Need Some Fine Wine And You, You Need To Be Nicer - how can you go wrong with a title like THAT. Catchy as fuck.
2. And Then You Kissed Me II - the violent metaphors are classic Cardigans, and I love the distortion on the final note.
1. Don't Blame Your Daughter - such cold, sad beauty. I love the weird gothic video too.

Really it's ALL about the last two albums for me. I hope we get more. I'm much less of a fan of solo Nina unfortunately.

I only have Gran Turismo - it's a really strong album. Do You Believe being particularly dreamy. I need to check their other stuff out.

Gran Turismo is probably one of my all-time favourite albums, its just totally :disco:
