What should we do with the final 50?

Zombie Nation – Kernkraft 400
1999, Germany, No. 2 smash! Not since Heather Proud’s ‘Small’ has a song/artist name combination given me so much gip. Kernkraft 400 means ‘nuclear energy 400’ in German. This contains a sample of David Whittaker’s ‘Star Dust’, from the Commodore 64 game Lazy Jones, which looks a bit shit. Zombie Nation is actually just producer Florain Senfter.
Did you know Zombie Nation is the song title and Kernkraft 400 is the artist?! :o just checking in case you didn't. X

TWENTY-FOUR! How many people can lay claim to a number of points that shares its name with some Kiefer Sutherland thing I never watched? This lot can!

Nalin & Kane – Beachball
1997, Germany, No 17 smash in 1998 with Tall Paul remix! A lovely bit of minimalist trance, woefully undermarked by a forum of evil internet trance h8rs. Their name comes from Nailing Anne Kane, a porn version of Being John Malkovich I just made up. Or it could be that their names are Andry Nalin & Harry Kane (not the footingball man).

Madison Avenue – Don’t Call Me Baby

1999, Australia, No 1 smash! I feel like I haven’t regaled you with any hot sample chat for a bit, so here’s some to whet your whistle: This samples Pino D’Angio’s ‘Ma Quale Idea’.
Originally a No. 30 smash! in 1999 (I bought it on single then, before it was cool), it was rereleased in 2000 and went to no. 1. It was slightly rewritten and released once more as ‘Who the Hell are You?’ a few months later.

Florence and the Machine – Spectrum (Say My Name) (Calvin Harris Remix)
2012, UK, No 1 smash! In which a lanky, laminated twat - who’s only Scottish when he remembers to be - teamed up with Calvin Harris to produce the surprise banger we didn’t think either of them were capable of. This remains Flossy and the Mac’s biggest selling single in the UK.
If Florence was fat at school, I hope she was given the nickname Heavy Flo, otherwise what’s the point?

Vengaboys – Boom Boom Boom Boom

1998, Netherlands, No. 1 smash in 1999! The Dutch are back again, this time with an 11/10 barnstormer which I thought was a shoe-in for the top 50. This apparently samples ABBA’s Lay All Your Love on Me, although I’m fucked if I can hear it, and was the first time the Vengabus took a detour through the top of the UK chart. Kim and Denise, the formerly hot women who’ve since morphed into drag tributes of themselves, are the only members who’ve remained with the group since the beginning.

I didn't know Everything You Need was a Madison Avenue song. I know it from my one and only Clubland compilation and I'm guessing the one on there is a more hectic mash-up (I loved the production and chorus, but always gritted my teeth at the horribly clunky verses that make more sense in the mellow Avenue setting).

Yeah, it was their 'look. we only cared about you for that one song, stop trying' moment. If it was on a Clubland album it was probably a shit cover by a band with a name like 'The Diva Playerz'.

You and @Jark should race to finish your rates. RATERACE.
I'm churning out the good shit 40-50 times a night, he only had 30 to rate in total! Okay he's doing graphics and dissecting the lyrical content of the songs, whereas I'm checking Wikipedia briefly then laughing at people who are too ugly to be in their own music videos, but still.

I also would expect him to have planned his all out before starting but LOL WHAT AM I SAYING.

I've also never cared for Deee-Lite or that Beyonce one, there are a couple of smashers in that list.

I think it’s safe to say we’re in ‘classic’ territory now. Let’s find out what absolute smashers you saw fit to lavish TWENTY-THREE points upon.

128

Kristine W – Feel What You Want (Our Tribe Vocal)
1994, USA/UK, No 33 smash! Our Tribe is just King Rollo off the Faithless, leaving his Dildo behind to branch out into the remixing game. This song was apparently featured in Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories. The internets are AWASH with information about Kristine W, such as that she is an LGBT advocate, and that her surname starts with W.

NOOOOOOOO. NOT MY 20!

I had a (sort of) ex who was really into Deee Lite, so I have been exposed. I can't remember if that was a good thing or not. I just don't rate Groove.

Doesn’t Pete Heller sample Sister Sledge’s Thinking Of You? Or is it just that the riff is remarkably similar to the sample you mention

I remember it being released just prior to the far superior ‘Makes Me Love You’ by Eclipse the same year, which does sample the Sledge, and they are notably similar tracks

Pump Up The Jam falls under the category of smash hit house tracks I hated when they were out, partly due to being ubiquitous and partly due to be just not getting that dirtier side of dance music at the time, When I was loving all the uplifting piano house.

call it nostalgia but i absolutely love it now

Honey I only discovered a few years back, I’m pretty sure thanks to Moopy. It’s sublime

and as good as the acid disco is of the Hercules/Antony ‘Blind’ track is, I hope everyone is familiar with the utter orgasm that is the Frankie Knuckles remix, which is quite possibly the greatest remix of all time. It just takes a very good track into a whole new emotional space

that baseline piano strings combo makes me want to WEEP :disco:

Last one - as good as that Dreamlover remix is (I love how she re-recorded the vocal to make better use of the mix) for me the greatest Mariah remix is Fantasy Sweet Dub mix. It’s barely a remix but a completely reimagining of the song, and might be my favourite Morales moment ever.
