Emmie – More Than This. 34 POINTS

1999, UK, No. 5 smash! This is a cover of Roxy Music's 1982 original, and managed to beat their chart position by one. Emmie is a proud Stopfordian (which I've just discovered means 'from Stockport'), and used to attend the prestigious Stockport College. She was apparently in a band called Lovebug who did the music for an Asda advert.

This one's a turn up for the books. I'd forgotten it even existed until this rate started, and it's performed consistently well both in the semi and here. Can't say I mind, to be honest, as it's an understated little throwback to a time when even minor commercial dance efforts had thought and care put into them. Much better than the identikit shite being knocked out these days.

Here she is on Pop of the Tops looking like she washes her hair with wallpaper paste.

I know what you mean. It's the sort of voice that you'd describe with the same enthusiasm as you would a nice pen.

As for playlists, I'd suggest you just bite the bullet and make one. I did, and it changed my life. I'd never go back to not having a playlist now.

9PM Til I Come was one of those tracks that the first time you hear it in a club it sounded totally new and fresh and like nothing else, and created quite a buzz. Fast forward 6 months and it's on every radio station every ten minutes and being played on CD UK with Ant & Dec, and after a while it lost its shimmer. Quite the phenomenon at the time though. It beat Whitney's "My Love Is Your Love" to the number 1 spot, back when that was still a big deal.

"Good Life" is amaze. That and "Big Fun" are one of the best 1-2 singles from a dance act surely ever. I fully recommend the debut album, it's a gorgeous mix of early dance, groove & R&B. This is currently on heavy rotation on the funky playlist, giving me Frankie Knuckles / David Morales vibes:

 
And YouTube has just this minute informed me that the above is actually a Stephanie Mills cover. My whole life is a lie.

2000, UK, No. 10 smash in 2002! Normal service has been resumed. Matt Darey hails from Leicester, land of crisps and Covid, and has already popped up on this countdown as a member of Lost Tribe. In 2015, he changed his name to Matt Nouveau to better reflect the deeper music he was producing, which is one of the most toe-curlingly WANKY things I've ever heard. Marcella Woods is a prolific dance vocalist who may have been on the X-Factor, and her brother is producer Michael Woods AKA Warrior.

Absolutely deserves its spot in the top 100, this. It's a multiple orgasm of a track, building and peaking continuously. I love that it eschews the delicate, coquettish female vocals found in the majority of pop songs in favour of a big, brassy barnstormer that wouldn't be out of place in an early 90s house anthem.

I always thought Emmie was one half of Diva, the Norwegian porn-esque duo who conquered The Sun Always Shines On TV with nothing but boredom and a push-up bra. Sadly she seems a bit more upmarket.

It came out around the time I'd just started doing pills and really did sound amazing at that time, especially off my tits. 6 months later I hated it.

2005, Germany, No. 2 smash! Anyone for a slice of vintage technocheese? Chav Queen (Germany and Central Europe region) Natalie Horler teamed up with her great pals Manian and Yanou (Him off DJ Sammy) to form Cascada in 2004, cementing their legacy with this, their second single. They released a Christmas album in 2012, which I’m FURIOUS I didn’t know about sooner, and croaked their way into Eurovision history with the ambitiously titled ‘Glorious’ in 2014.

There are two types of people in this world: People who admit to loving ‘Everytime We Touch’; and Goddamn fucking liars. I’m proud to say I’m in the former category.

Here they are performing at Clubland Live. Fuck me, this looks like it would have been AMAZING. If we’re ever allowed to attend anything ever again, we should all go.

Bizarre Inc Featuring Angie Brown - I'm Gonna Get You. 34 POINTS

1992, UK, No 3 smash. It’s the return of sample chat! This one takes elements from ‘Brass Disk’ by Dupree and ‘Give it Up’ by Kool & the Gang and uses lyrics from Jocelyn Brown’s ‘Love’s Gonna Get You’. Angie Brown appeared on the voice in 2014 singing this, but none of the judges turned around, not even Kiley. Ange had the last laugh, mind, as she ended up higher on this list than that bitch. As a bonus video, here she is performing to the backs of some chairs, having apparently just robbed Marge Simpsons’s jewellery collection:




Now THIS is how to do early 90s and get me to take notice. This one ticks a lot of boxes for me, and there’s just something quite cool and assured about the whole package. My mate used to think this was called ‘Wild Disco Time’, which is all I ever hear now.

The KLF ft. Tammy Wynette – Justified and Ancient. 34 POINTS

1991, UK/USA, No. 2 smash! The mythology behind this song, the KLF and the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu is difficult to explain, so I won’t bother trying. In fairness I barely understand it myself. This one borrows a riff from ‘Voodoo Child’ by Jimi Hendrix. Tammy Wynette was 49 years old in this video, a fact many of us are still reeling at. She died in 1998, clearly NOT from old age as I’d always assumed. The KLF also recorded ‘Doctorin’ the Tardis’ as The Timelords.

Here I am, chuntering away to all who’ll listen about how I’m not really keen on early 90s dance, completely forgetting this exists. Releasing a house anthem at the height of British rave culture, and having it feature the unambiguously country vocals of down-home gal’ Tammy was a baller move, but it absolutely works. She makes this whole thing, gamely going along with it despite clearly having not a fucking clue what’s happening. I’ve loved this since I was a wain, I love it now.

Here’s a fucking awesome live performance which just nails the whole point of the song perfectly.

David Guetta feat. Kelly Rowland – When Love Takes Over. 35 POINTS

2009, France/USA, No. 1 smash! WHO KNEW SHE WAS GOIN’ UPTEMPO? OW! This was originally an instrumental track, until Kelly Rowland convinced him to let her write and record vocals for it. It turned out to be a wise decision, as this is apparently the most successful dance pop collaboration of all time. No mean feat considering how many collabs he’s made over the years. This was influential in the emergence of eedeyem in America, three full years before it was even invented by David and his mate Usher. This was covered by Pixie Lott, which is a shame.

I remember absolutely loving this when it was first released. Time and wild overplaying has diluted the appeal a bit, but its ubiquity just underscores what an accessible, feel-good banger it actually is.

Here she is, fully recovered from the throat infection that blighted her time on the X-Factor.

Strike – U Sure Do. 35 POINTS

1994, UK, No. 4 smash in 1995! Do you lot like this one? YOU SURE DO! Strike are future Freestyler Matt Cantor, future Plump DJ Andy Gardner, and woman Victoria Newton. This samples Donna Allen’s ‘Serious’ and Cubic 22’s ‘Night in Motion’. Though they never managed to match the success of U Sure Do again, they nonetheless troubled the top 40 a fair few time throughout the 90s.

This one’s a school disco-tastic bit of nostalgia for me. It came about at around the time that I started to take notice of dance music, so it’ll always have a special place in my heart.

Here’s a definitely live performance from TOTP, featuring cameos from Hole and a pre-pubescent PJ and Dec. Fuck me, the 90s were brilliant.

William Orbit – Barber’s Adagio for Strings (Ferry Corsten Mix). 35 POINTS

1999, UK, No. 4 smash! Discerning Moopists will already know that this is a cover of Samuel Barber’s hard house stomper ‘Adagio for Strings’ from 1936. Once again, Ferry Corsten is on hand to work his magic, this time deigning to use his real name! The most shocking fact I uncovered about William Orbit is that he's now 68 years old, which is the same age Madonna was when she drafted him in to produce her 2000 album ‘Music’.

Obviously it's a yes from me. A gorgeous bit of dream trance that would inspire ever more elaborate orchestral breakdowns in trance tracks to come, this still packs the same wallop it did 21 years ago.

Here's Ferry Corsten playing to something called a 'crowd' (Not familiar with the term) at a 'festerval' (sp?) in Prague.

 
Kelly Llorenna, Karen Parry and Judy Murray. They're what's known in the industry as disgusting human beings. They're also known as triple threats. Cascada are triple tripe.

However, I give up all my standards for Glorious and Evacuate though.

Bobby Brown - Two Can Play That Game (K-Klassik Radio Edit). 36 POINTS

1994, USA, No. 3 smash! Whitney's other half finally started earning his own crack money with this belter, and in doing so earned himself a higher placing on the list than she managed even with three songs in the running. Bobbert 'Bobby' Brown teamed up with prolific Welsh producers K-Klass for the remix that put him on the map over here. Bobbert is a father of seven children, most of whom are still alive. What a champ.

This is great, isn't it? I understand the term 'problematic fave' now, because I refuse to dislike it even though he's a monumental prick who got sweet, virginal church girl Whitney into a seedy lifestyle of hard drugs and duetting with Enrique Iglesias.

Poor Angie Brown. I felt she was humiliated and patronised in that clip. I'll always remember both she and Sybil continuing to sing acapella during the Big Day Out 2005 sets when the bitchy host tried to get them off.
 
Was Justified & Ancient recorded before wheeling in old Tammy? I included it in a playlist I made ahead of a 7 hour car trip driving from let's say Reading to where Susan Boyle lives and was gutted when I didn't get my fix of Wynette's rusty chipmunk twang.
 
I don't believe Kelly insisted she be allowed to "write" a song on top of Guetta's Coldplay instrumental. I believe Michelle played her new song Tonight Tonight Tonight Tonight Tonight at Butlins and Rowland lived up to her own debut single and stole it.
