One of the absolute finest songs of the entire Eurovision decade

The Mercy performance was more boring than I remembered.

I had it in my head that they'd made a rousing comeback in the latter half of the decade, when really it was two great songs in 2016 and 2017 and back to the turgid shite from there on.

2nd: Amir - J'ai cherche (146pts)

After a decade of near total misery, France finally cracked the code in 2016 that hot guy + catchy tune generally = hit. It's not rocket science, guys!

An internal selection that I believe was already gaining traction at domestic radio before it was selected, this wound up being a huge local hit and returned France to the top ten for the first time since 2009. It's a TOUCH on the basic side, but those lovely eyes and his palpable joy in performing it more than make up for it. He seems to have done very well since, with his last two albums both going triple Platinum. Meanwhile, Joe & Jake's latest release is apparently just a few kickstarters away from hitting Aluminium status in mid-Wales.

1st: Madame Monsieur - Mercy (168pts)

What could be more deliciously French than delivering a very serious ballad about victims of the refugee crisis... in PRADA?

Winners of France's temporarily revived national selection, big things were expected of Madame Monsieur in Lisbon. 13th place was therefore a bit of a letdown - I think maybe the stage show was a bit too sparse. This is one of those where they really could have done with translations of the lyrics flashing up behind them, but the zero-budget Lisbon staging put paid to that.

Still, a very CLASSY effort with just a hint of hauteur and a very fuckable male co-lead - essentially everything you want from the French.

Mercy is just a little too much of a grower for Eurovision I think - it’s more of a 4 time listen for me.

A French journalist tracked down the real Mercy and her mother, still in a refugee camp at the time and played them the song. As you can see, they were thrilled about the whole thing.

Mercy seems to be a bit RESTRICTED by the 3 minutes - it seems to really get going then just ENDS!

And whilst I really like the staging, I agree that the lyrics on screen and also better camerawork during the FISTPUMPING would have made it feel more like a moment.

Georgia

10th: Ethno-Jazz Band Iriao - For You (43pts)

Obviously this selection was a true embarrassment of riches, but somebody has to come last, so commiserations to these hot Georgian daddies and their catchy bop.

Prior to Eurovision, the band just went by the name Iriao, but they decided to add the Ethno Jazz Bank bit for Lisbon just in case anybody got confused and thought this was a dubstep record. Genre-branding, it's important!

As soporific as this is, I do kind of feel bad for them singing their humble Georgian hearts out to an audience of bored gays who were almost certainly all looking at their phones throughout. Nothing offensive here, and I'm sure the one with the monobrow has played a star turn in many a Zu-Klara fever dream, but this is the definition of Semi Final filler.

This was better than I would have expected, given that ethno-jazz is right up there with chlamydia-riddled when it comes to adjectives that I don't want any part of.
