5th: SENNEK - A Matter of Time (98pts)

Star quality's a funny thing. Near impossible to define, but you know it when you see it, and more importantly you know it when you don't see it.

To wit, SENNEK, queen of unearned caps and a spiritual Bond themes. In this performance, it's genuinely difficult to keep your eyes on her, the only possible saving grace being that there's fuck all going on behind or to the side of her either. This was highly favoured in the early betting but very swiftly fell away. There's a good song and a good voice at work here, sadly SENNEK herself just appears to be one of life's understudy's.

Sidebar: I've never understood those transparent dresses that wind up looking like tea-cosies for your trousers. Just pick a silhouette FFS!

Poor old Sennek, presumably rumours made up to give her a certain star quality.

It's one of their better entries and does feel like Belgium finding their own sound again but yet again another who sagged like an old onion skin when it came to the stage. A running theme with latter day Belgium. Shocking, then, how a certain someone, much as I love it, not only got away with it but was handsomely rewarded.
 
Also yes Tom Dice is incredibly fuckable. I should've upped him for that alone.

To be honest I did skim through early Belgium for the most part in my recap, and seeing a man with a guitar was never going to be one to hang around for when time was oh so short

4th: Laura Tesoro - What's The Pressure (126pts)

Now here's a girl who genuinely did possess, if not star quality exactly then at least an abundance of stage presence sufficient to elevate this fairly weak sauce Uptown Funk / Sax re-write into a genuinely rousing show opener.

There's definitely a faint whiff of the Bonnie Langfords' about lil' Laura, and I'm sure she had a very 'encouraging' mother waiting in the wings and reminding her not to bother to come home unless she cracked the left hand of the leaderboard. But fair play to the girl, she hit all her marks, accomplished her mission and actually managed to project a believable simulation of actual fun in the process.

Nobody's favourite, but a consistent high-middle for those of us who appreciate [chad michaels voice] professionalism. [/]

Oh Laura, I could never get over that look. That outfit, the awful hair style, but christ yes she gave her all - and quite a feat to drag that into the top 10 in the behemoth that was 2016.
 
Oh I'll be honest loves, I'm sure SHE'S alright but I've never been able to get along with how much of a total mismatch for the song she was. Giving it all TAPPA-TAPPA-TAPPA and STAPLED GRINS when she should've been giving it a COCAINE ADDICTION AND TWENTY-A-DAY GRIZZLE
 
I mean where was the SEXUAL AGGRESSION? She's the lovely girl who likes horses a bit too much and probably enjoys being taken on a date to Winter Wonderland. She needed WHORE'S ROUGE, A FLASH OF LEG AND A WINK!
 
Oh I don't know this was supposedly a great opener on paper, but the unoriginality of it all and probably Laura Torso herself didn't help its case with the DC jury.
 
3rd: Roberto Bellarosa (167pts)

Oh bless this sweet fragile little bunny. To this day I have no idea how somebody so clearly ill-suited to public performance got the nod for Eurovision, got his mitts on a genuine electro-pop banger and somehow managed to pull it all together while still looking as though a close relative was being held at gunpoint just narrowly out of frame.

It all worked though, and he managed to go from rank outsider to a creditable 12th on the leaderboard. I haven't looked it up, but I kinda hope success turned him into an entitled, cocaine-addled monster. I suspect it's rather more likely that he now works in a Library, but let me dream.

Luff keels, wover endover indeed. As, apparently, do the five stages of cystitis if those backing dancers are anything to go by.

Only THIRD? Where can I find this 'Win the Game' and 'Kalabaliken', if those even are their real names? I would have strong words with them.

Also those backing dancers were Eurovision all-time greats. I'm still mildly delighted/AGOG that Europe was sufficiently mesmered to chuck him a left hand result.
 
Obviously, I'm aware that Blanche has won, but I would be just delighted if it turned out to be Loic.
