3rd: Joci Pápai - Origo (122pts)
As in reality, Joci's vastly superior first entry does considerably better with the Moopy masses than his comeback effort. This is really rather stirring and feels, dare I say, quite authentic? It also kind of sounds like the kind of hook that would've been sampled on a 90s dance hit had it been around at the time.
Costume wise, it's nice that he bothered to put on some shoes this time, and I'm always here for a cummerbund. Dancer lady is really SERVING IT with the facial acting too, and poor violin lady clearly thought she was the star turn with her little satellite stage and 5 seconds of TV time.
If Hungary must be so po-faced about Eurovision, I wish they did it like this a bit more often. Although I suppose 2019 sort of disproved the wisdom of that advice...

A passably modern effort that gave Hungary their biggest hit in two decades. The domestic abuse message was a touch ON THE NOSE staging wise, but at least he had the good manners to attach it to a half-decent tune (are you listening, Poland?)
Since this moment of glory, András has, I believe, tried every single year to get back on the Eurovision stage, with no joy. Now that Hungary are out of the game, I'd definitely put him on San Marino watch sometime in the future. The boy's thirsty for it.
No 12s here, this was rated as 'upper tier but not beloved' by virtually everybody.

An absolutely stonking victory for Hungary's Edvard Munch-featured diva. The competition wasn't exactly fierce, but this would be a clear Moopy favourite from pretty much any country.
Oh, to go back to the first moment we heard this song. I don't think it was originally pitched for Eurovision, but once the gay internet got wind of it, that was clearly its spiritual destination, and fan pressure built sufficiently that Hungarian TV got on board.
Kati herself is an X Factor Hungary alum - if you haven't watched her jaw dropping performances of Hot Stuff, Bring Me To Life and When Love Takes Over yet, then seriously DROP EVERYTHING and inject this compilation directly into your veins.
This ineffable stage presence and vocal talant followed her to the bright lights of Dusseldorf, where sadly it all fell apart rather spectacularly. 22nd place is still an absolute outrage, but like Kate Ryan and Angelica Agurbash before her, it seems some stars just shine too brightly for the Eurovision stage.

Austria reinvented themselves incredibly well in the wake of Conchita's victory, racking up a strong run of qualifiers until it all came to a screeching - and I use that word advisedly - halt in 2019 with this.
The idea was there I think - internally select a trendy up and coming artist and give her a global spotlight - but sadly the song really wasn't for Eurovision and nerves got the better of her quite spectacularly when it mattered.
German speaking countries should really stop sending women with blue hair to Eurovision. It always ends badly.

What a terrible, terrible band name.
I was quite excited when Conchita won for all of the obvious reasons, but also for the novelty of an Austrian auto-qualifier. What would one of Eurovision's most historically hapless nations do with this rare opportunity?

I watched the 2017 semi results come in with a friend of mine who is a huge Estonia loon, and particularly emotionally invested that year in Verona qualifying (frankly, who wasn't?). As the announcements came through and he got nervous, I confidently told him that they'd want to save the big fan favourite for envelope ten.
You can imagine the gay horror in the room when this was drawn instead. It kind of paints this song as more hateful than it actually is, but it's truly the definition of a jury save (he was 14th on the televote), and the ZERO PUNKTE moment in the finals was poetic justice. Not that it was any consolation to team Verona
The giant moon seems like a very expensive and unwieldy stage prop considering they did fuck all with it.

Wolf Kati is one of the few Eurovision favourites where I’d genuinely rather watch the promo video than the Eurovision performance

A very well-sung but ultimately very dreary ballad that got Austria back in the finals for the first time since the semis were introduced, but withered on the vine once there.
The a capella intro is seriously impressive, but there were about three too many songs in this vain in the 2011 finals, and they all ended up doing about the same. Nadine and her rather fab Liza Minnelli hair deserved a better song.

Bizarrely the MakeMakes seem to have made a minor career for themselves in Scotland, racking up two top 30 hits last year on the Official Scottish Singles Chart (YES IT IS A LEGITIMATE THING).

Who knew this aggressively hetero nonsense had a Moopy fanbase? I suppose considering what's beneath it, at least this has something about it, however off-putting it may be.
Personally, I think it's a mistake for German-speakers to ever try for 'street' and evidently the viewers agreed, as this finished dead last in its semi. The pole dancing stage show probably wouldn't get a free pass today and rightly so. God bless the Azeri camera operator for finding the two women in the half-empty arena who were able to convincingly act like they were into it.

Against virtually any other competition, I'm sure this would have walked it. A massive fan favourite and a proper fairytale journey, if you ignore those poxy juries trying to do her in at every turn. Can you believe they gave higher points to MONTENEGRO in the semi finals? May they all catch Coronavirus...
Anyway, this is quite obviously a shimmering delight and the extent to which the hardcore fans got behind her in Stockholm is a phenomenon I really haven't witnessed before or since. She got an absolute heroes reception everywhere she went, and in a final with many highlights, the absolute roar of approval when the televoters deliver justice is right up there for me.

It may not be the trendiest or the biggest hit to win Eurovision in recent years, but it's hard to argue with Conchita's victory as the defining moment of the decade. Given recent events around gender recognition and LGBT visibility, it feels as groundbreaking a moment as ever - a rallying point, sure, but also a truly spectacular marriage of song, performance and performer.
Strange as it may seem on paper, these are the moments that prevent Eurovision from sinking into kitschy irrelevance. If you weren't moved by Conchita's victory that night, it's hard to imagine what you actually watch Eurovision FOR, really.
I probably go back to Zoë's song and performance more, personally, but when it came to voting in this, I just couldn't see the finals without Conchita. To omit her from a search for the greatest entry of the 2010s would have been utterly wrong.
