Moopyvision 2010-2019 Round 4: Greece, Latvia & Norway - RESULTS!

2nd: Justs - Heartbeat (181pts)

Justs+Eurovision+Song+Contest+2016+Final+Sz7dx3fnj2gl.jpg

Having dragged Latvia up from the doldrums the previous year, Aminata graciously agreed to bless her home country with another composition, this time staying behind the scenes and handing over to the not un-photogenic Justs.

I like this on record, but I must admit I find the final live performance near unbearable. REIGN IT IN LUV. :zombie:

3 x 12 (Dark Carnival, Buttertart, David_5000)
1 x 0 (Penelope)

Which means...

1st: Aminata - Love Injected (197pts)

But of course.

The fun thing about loser nations like Latvia is that you never know quite what you're going to get. A smirky ditty about baking one year, then an imperious FKA Twigs does Eurovision anthem the next.

Suffice to say this is easily the classiest and most credible thing Latvia ever did, and it retains its power even now. The stage show, the vocals, the on-trendiness of it all, for once everything fell in Latvia's favour. I feel like it'd maybe even finish a place or two higher than the 6th position it achieved in 2015, if it were to compete today.

I strongly suspect she'll return someday anyway. There's a big feeling of unfinished business here.

11 x 12 (Ill Advised, Alla, Kevin7, sewerynsven, Win The Game, dmlaw, Ag, Kevin, Kalabaliken, Raining on Me, lolly)
1 x 0 (Dark Carnival)

Oh my god if you haven't seen the accompanying high-budget video then you simply MUST read this and then watch:

I evidently RUSHED and looked up the video right after watching the perf! Her being recognised at the airport is obviously my favourite part.

If you like "Love Injected" then she also penned "I'm Like Woolf" which nearly represented Lithuania in 2017

:D at the ZERO. I thought it was alright at the time but then I thought FKA twigs was alright at the time and goodness me has THAT ship sailed

Norway

10th: Alexander Rybak - That's How You Write a Song (16pts :basil:)

rybak-norway-2018-800x600.jpg

A truly DuBovie-esque score for Alexander here with his not entirely successful attempt to recapture Fairytale glories.

This was never actually going to do that, despite speculation at the time, but an ill-timed bout of 'flu can't have helped matters. His toothy gurning is an acquired taste at the best of times, but throw in nervous, sweaty exhaustion and you have a package that's more likely to scare the children than conquer Eurovision.

It didn't actually do THAT badly, but 15th is a fair old fall from grace after the biggest Eurovision landlside of the modern era. Maybe write a better one next time, eh Alex?

Highest score: 4 (Jacques, lolly)
15 x 0 (Everybody else bar David_5000, Superstylin', Suomi and VoR)

9th: Didrik Solli-Tangen - My Heart is Yours (65pts)

Big things were expected of Norway's home team champion in 2010, with this operatic ballad courtesy of composer and human potato Fredrik Kempe. Unfortunately, both Ireland and Belarus made the final with near-identical songs, which is a hell of a split. Throw in some quite painfully off-key vocals and this was a rather shameful flop.

Shame, he really is/was very pretty.

3 x 6 (Ill Advised, sewerynsven, Alla)
1 x 0 (Suomi)

I think I had a three way tie for my 4 points. I gave it to Rybak after thinking I probably penalised him for his smarm.

8th: Stella Mwangi - Haba Haba (79pts)

Stella+Mwangi+Eurovision+Song+Contest+Dusseldorf+hF31LcpU265l.jpg

et tu, Moopy? :(

In fairness this Caribbean-inspired ditty isn't quite as good as many of us built it up to be at the time, but even so, revisiting it for this hurt my heart a little. Say what you like about the empty staging and occasionally dodgy vocals, we all know why it flopped as hard as it did.

She seems to have picked herself up and appears to still be active on the Norwegian music scene, so good for her.

I did always think the white lady backing dancer in the performance looked VERY out of place, I must say.

1 x 8 (Kalabaliken)
1 x 0 (Superstylin - clearly a white supremacist)

For all the people that complain about THYWAS, if you hadn't all voted for that Fairytale shite in your masses, this never would've happened :side-eye:

I enjoy Haba Haba much more if I imagine that she's singing Hasa Diga Eebowai.

I think we should avoid a BECAUSE RACIST narrative with Haba Haba. Because PISS POORIST more like!

7th: JOWST - Grab The Moment (85pts)

Jowst-Norway-Eurovision-2017-Rehearsal.jpg

A rather chart-friendly entry that crept into the top ten back in 2017 and had a solid afterlife on Spotify, where it currently boasts an impressive 18 million streams.

The looped vocal sample was QUITE the Euroloon scandal at the time, but in the end the EBU let it pass. Another quiet dagger through the hearts of the old school fans still yearning for the return of the Orchestra. :(

This seems to have been square in the middle of the scoreboard for most of you. Even I don't dislike it, despite the 0. It just doesn't particularly do anything for me.

1 x 10 (Kevin7)
2 x 0 (David_5000, VoR)

6th: Tooji - Stay (90pts)

Tooji-and-his-dancers-e1337879450244.jpg

Oh, bless this enthusiastic baby Gay. One of the many pop bangers of 2012 wiped out of contention by the Euphoria juggernaut, it was a bit amateurish but undeserving of last place in my opinion, even if I haven't quite forgiven him for blocking Love Unlimited from the finals.

He seems to have dropped off the radar a bit these days, but he caused a bit of a local kerfuffle back in 2015 when he released a controversial video in which he gets fucked in a church. QUEEN!

4 x 8 (Jacques, Pingu, Ag, David_5000)
4 x 1 (Buttertart, Zu Klara, Alla, sewerynsven)

5th: Carl Espen - Silent Storm (96pts)

Essentially 'Don't Cry Out Loud' for Eurovision's sadboi contingent, this was quite an affecting / buzzkilling moment at the 2014 Contest, depending on your level of mileage for these things.

I liked it a lot, and I was pleased to discover that it holds up very well indeed. You could probably draw a fairly clear line between this opening the floodgates and Duncan Laurence's victory last year. But as with everything 2014, with Conchita on the stage all other narratives were swept away. :disco:

1 x 12 (Zu Klara)
4 x 1 (Pingu, lolly, David 5000, Kalabaliken)

I absolutely love Stay; the problem is Norway’s just too good.

Winning the semi, finishing 15th in the final. I hate it but how is that possible?

The worst thing about this is the obvious obligation and the sheer lack of inspiration involved.

4th: Mørland & Debra Scarlett - A Monster Like Me (111pts)

2c04078538d4d5c841d3ee878b84b3a2.jpg

Another fairly gloomy ballad, although with more of an Andrew Lloyd Webber bent than poor wrist-slitty Carl.

I always feel it's a shame this and Goodbye to Yesterday came through in the same year. They must have cancelled each other out a fair bit.

After years of speculation, Mørland finally confirmed recently that the terrible thing he did in his early youth was fist a puppy. So now you know. :)

1 x 12 (Dark Carnival)
1 x 0 (lolly)

I do hope all those of you who have been flicking through this week’s Woman’s Realm and groaning about Icebreaker being two different songs realise that the whole point of the chorus being different is that she turns up on her icebreaker and BREAKS THE ICE OF THE VERSE I MEAN DO COME ON GIRLS
