Moopyvision 2010-2019 Round 5: Azerbaijan, Ireland & Slovenia

Nobody wants standard radio friendly fodder from Slovenia.

Angry, miserable and harsh sounding (combined or alone, either works) all the way please.

6th: Eva Boto ft. Kati Wolf - Verjamem (112pts)

Having ditched the rest of Yugoslavia like an embarrassing childhood friend as soon as they saw the way the wind was blowing, Slovenia don't tend to go down the BBB route very often. Perhaps that explains the chilly reception to this, which was tipped for greatness but ultimately finished a mortifying second last in its semi.

In fairness, reluctant child bride Eva was very unfortunate to be in a semi final that was essentially a class reunion for said embarrassing former friends. She had to contend with Serbia, Macedonia, Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina (sorry Montenegro, we couldn't find a forwarding address :) ), all of whom essentially had the exact same idea. Something had to give, and in this instance Slovenia's historic fickleness came back to haunt them.

1 x 12 (lolly)
1 x 0 (superstylin')

How the hell is Hvala Ne in the top half, and above the lovely Verjamem? Shame on you, moopy.

LOVE Verjamem but as you say, essentially doomed by its company I think in BOTH instances (its semi / EVERYTHING ELSE from Slovenia this decade)

Admittedly that hair stroking WAS a bit weird and that blonde one had a look of a woman who likes to express her emotions with a dirty protest, which is quite obviously what Eva’s looking at in that picture :(

5th: Tinkara Kovač - Round & Round (116pts)

Wizened crone Tinkara Kovač (87) rescued Slovenia from a two-year slump with this affable Parachute re-write. Being in the easiest semi final of all time certainly helped, but she gave it as much gusto as her advanced osteoporosis would allow, and the stage show was simple but effective.

Still only scored 9 points in the final, but whaddyagonnado?

1 x 12 (Dark Carnival)
1 x 2 (Superstylin')

Round and Round would have been improved if the whole thing had been in Slovene. That last verse was the best part.

(allegedly)
It is a step to victory
it is a step to the lights
it is a step to perfection
PERFECTION

Hvala, ne! :disco:

I didn’t really remember the song but I distinctly recalled Princess @Penelope going on about HATCHET-FACED TINKY at the time :D

Round and Round is rather more crowd pleasing than most Slovenian entries but it's a melodic joy and another one to add to the ever growing list of entries I don't want to forget but probably will forever by the time 3rd place is announced :(

4th: Maraaya - Here For You (136pts)

Before revisiting for this round, I had totally forgotten what a banging tune this is, most likely on account of how utterly misguided every aspect of the stage performance was.

You have to be in possession of a great deal of star quality to carry off onstage headphones, and poor budget Bridalwear model Marjetka seemed more like a half-hearted dress rehearsal placeholder. Not sure the 'invisible instruments' gimmick really translated either.

Shame, it's a very good song and they were expected to be contenders, but ultimately they had to settle for 14th place in Vienna.

4 x 12 (Suomi, Superstylin', Kevin7, Alla)
1 x 0 (Ag)

Goodness, Slovenia really HAVE sent a lot of women this decade

Here For You is very fun (and is FEY HETEROSEXUAL ICON FT columnist Janan Ganesh's favourite Eurovision entry of the decade, FACT FANS)

3rd: Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl - Sebi (146pts)

Speaking of DRIPPING IN STAR QUALITY, these moody millennials arrived in Tel Aviv on a wave of hype, and promptly announced at a press conference that they were bored of it all and couldn't wait to go home. :D

Hipster nonsense aside, this is a rather lovely slice of t.A.T.u. meets Everything But The Girl dream-pop, the low-key charms of which predictably divided Moopy voters. As for Eurovision, its mid-show placement read as a bit of a buzzkill. I reckon had they closed the evening, they might have done a fair bit better than the 15th place they ended up with.

6 x 12 (Zu Klara, Raining on Me, SDF, Kevin, Win The Game, sewerynsven)
1 x 0 (lolly)

No-One vs Hvala Ne. This was a close week, 7 points in it (barring any Greece-style disasters)

Still got my fingers crossed for news of a really nasty, bitter break up. Don't let me down.

Doing QUITE so well from the position they were in (which yes, read very much as "WHY ARE YOU RUINING MY GAY POP CONTEST AT 8PM" at the time) was a hell of a warning shot. If they'd had Kruna's slot on the night I don't think top five would've been out of the question.

As for the song itself, a truly SPARSE BLEAK PLEASURE. Xanaxpop at its FINEST

THIRD? Mind you, I suppose this is the lounge of hell which put lovely Francesca in third. I shall interpret it as a compliment and triumph and I suppose we can’t all be discerning :)

If I was voting on song only, this would have been 10 or 8. But that performance is utterly fucking disturbing and I cannot condone it.

Do you know what I hate about Hvala Ne? That bit where they pretend that the music has broken. The EBU should have apologised and made them do it again and again until they stopped fucking about.

omg I was waiting to ask if doing that was even LEGAL, surely it's not?

:o

I thought the suicidal cultists had it in the bag.

The whole piece is an overcast beauty and I think the simple, slightly scary staging/performance enhanced it for them on the night. But yeah, mid-show is not where it should have been..

:D It was actually fun ONCE. But once was QUITE ENOUGH!
