Moopyvision 2010-2019 Round 5: Azerbaijan, Ireland & Slovenia

No One is my favourite song from the 2011 contest.

Mind you something had to get a 12 and really there's not much in it is there as horrific as the poor boy is. Does he ever leave the house now I wonder? Or the ward. I imagine he could taken quite the mental turn in the intervening years :(

9th: Nicky Byrne - Sunlight (61pts)

It probably says it all about Ireland's Eurovision trajectory that by 2016, securing the 4th most memorable member of Westlife counted as something of a stunt-casting coup.

The song isn't the worst thing ever written, but bejaysus if Nicky isn't woefully out of his depth on this one. Some people get two verse lines at most for a REASON. Genuinely quite embarrassing to watch.

All that and Petra Mede essentially called him a past-it old cunt to his face in the green room. What a dismal experience all round.

2 x 6 (lolly, David_5000)
3 x 0 (Penelope, dmlaw, Suomi)

Someone pop him a note through to let him know that he’s won an award and cash prize in the internet’s premier chat boutique. Well, 12 off @Penelope but it’s AS GOOD AS

Now that REALLY should've been last

I mean at least Brendan looks like someone who COULD BE NOMINATED for an Oscar. I think I'd have to CHARGE Nicky to throw it up me

Why would you get one of Westlife and then give him a mid tempo song?

Why HAVEN'T they just got Westlife by the way? Surely it's not beyond them at this point.

Not that I ever want to see that hideous group on my screens again, but you know..

8th: Sarah McTernan - 22 (67pts)

8th - what a $ucce$$! :disco:

You can at least sense a modicum of thought and effort behind this, I guess. Song-wise it's perfectly hummable, if a bit too Radio 2 to really inspire people to vote.

The real issue, of course, was HER. What a fabulously memeable face of hate. Hair extensions that made her look like a dragged-up show pony and the kind of stage presence where you can literally see her counting out every step in her head before she does it.

A song this breezy needs to radiate good natured joy (see Denmark 2019 for an example of a similar concept executed much more effectively). Sarah performed it like her milkshake had been spiked with Mogadon.

2 x 10 (David_5000, Win The Game)
7 x 0 (Raining on Me, SDF, Zu Klara, Pingu, Alla, NonEvent, Ag)

7th: Molly Sterling - Playing With Numbers (93pts)

Yet another example of Ireland banking on a back to basics approach, which could have paid off had this had any discernible hook and somebody had told Molly to open her eyes at any point during the performance.

I'm sure she gets reluctantly coerced into wheeling this one out at the piano down the local boozer from time to time, whereupon the bleary-eyed locals will slap her on the back, compliment her on her lovely voice and tell her she was robbed (she wasn't).

1 x 12 (Dark Carnival)
2 x 0 (Kevin7, David 5000)

Oh bless, that was actually MUCH nicer than I recalled :( I threw her an 8.

I imagine she would've qualified had she swapped places in the semi running order with Roller Pole.

:D

One of the revelations in these topics is that @VoR has had to look back on some of these songs. I assumed he had a comprehensive recollection of all the songs.

I of course forget about 95% of them by June each year.

6th: Ryan Dolan - Only Love Survives (107pts)

God, I'd forgotten what a quintessential provincial queen this one was. :D

Not a bad stab, all told, though the chorus pushed his vocal right to the edge of unpleasantness. Typical luck o' the Irish that he basically had the exact same stage concept as eventual winner Emmelie DeForest.

He at least got them to the finals, but it was a tragic JUMBO PLATS once there. I bet he still uses a performance still from this on his Grindr profile.

2 x 12 (David_5000, kevin7)
1 x 0 (Ill Advised)

Ryan Dolan has, with all the inevitability of a passing season, had a glow-up this decade by getting the CUSTOMARY Clapham gay facial hair
