Moopyvision 2010-2019 Round 7: Belarus, Finland & The Netherlands

I remember the "Sing it Away" year sitting in the garden when all the entries were out, having a few drinks in the sun and thinking we'd all have a fab gay old time listening to all the entries for the year.

"Sing it Away" came on first and that was the end of that. We never finished, or even got to the second song.

(And yet it's not even THAT bad by Finland's standards :D)
 
5th: Kuunkuiskaajat - Työlki ellää (108pts)

Like Melfest icons Lili & Susie taking an acid trip on the set of Midsommar before sewing Tom Dice inside a bear and setting him on fire, this is an offbeat delight that I would've loved to see in the finals. It also came shockingly close, as mentioned in the Moldova thread, another 3 points to this and Epic Sax Guy would have been a much smaller footnote in Eurovision history.

Quirky, Finnish to the bone and performed by two women clearly having the time of their lives, just send this sort of thing every year and damn the scoreboard.

I'm usually in favour of countries singing in their own language, but based on this I'm willing to make an exception for Finland.

Not exactly Moopy friendly on paper, but very melodic and well-performed, this is essentially HATARI before they discovered buttplugs and turned out to be a rare Finnish appearance on the left-hand side of the scoreboard. They seem to have done quite well out of it, too.

I could do without the screaming, personally. But this manages to be a good pop song without sacrificing its core of Finnishness.

I really didn't mind this then and still find it quite good.
 
3rd: Krista Siegfrids - Marry Me (129pts)

Another one of those sneaky FinnoSwedes (or possibly a deep undercover Samantha Fox), Krista Siegfrids brought big Katy Perry energy to the 2013 contest with this fun little number that skates just along the edge of irritating.

I remember one of my more staunchly feminist friends being utterly horrified by the lyrics to this one during my annual Eurovision previews. It's not exactly Andrea Dworkin, but dear old Krista at least crowbarred in an LGBT kiss to piss off the haters, and this will clearly be the highlight of her life until the day she dies.

I had to check what I gave Pernilla but it really is lovely and if it wasn't for being a song I only remembered because of this I think it would be higher - although whether a blackbird or lesbain monster would fall under its charms as sacrifice who knows.

That's 3 great Finnish entries but I couldn't care less about the rest and it really is mostly DIRGE

CONFESSION TIME : I didn’t bother replaying Something Better and now I’ve only just realised that it’s not the same song as A Friend in London - New Tomorrow from Denmark 2011. Had I not made this mistake I would have given it 4 rather than 0. APOLOGEES!

It's an easy mistake to make. If this situation arises in future, use my handy mnemonic: "Something Better is excellent, New Tomorrow is a steaming lump of shite."

Hotly tipped to do big things at Eurovision 2017, alas Sanna Nielsen's biological mother wound up taking an early flight home after this Blackbird failed to take flight. :(

I mean, yes, it's very pretty, but honestly talk about a BUZZKILL. Shoving it between SPACE and SKELETONS in the semi final running order was always going to kill it stone dead in retrospect.

Frankly, I also take issue with the lyrics. Who wants a disgusting old Blackbird squawking away outside your bedroom window while you're trying to have a night of passion? No wonder he wound up leaving her.

1st: Saara Aalto - Monsters (188pts)

Honestly, was there ever anybody more destined to be a fan favourite who finished 25th at Eurovision than Saara Aalto? The woman practically has it in her bones.

Long on the fanboy radar following two near-misses at the Finnish national selection, Saara cannily raised her profile with a successful run on X Factor UK and wound up getting a personal invite to represent her home country the following year.

Monsters is of course an excellent pop song and a deserving winner here, but you can see how the fates aligned against her. Even without Toy and Fuego gobbling up the pop vote and the rather kitchen-sink stage performance, Saara just comes from that Linda Bengtzing school of nakedly wanting it just that little bit too much.

I have no doubt she'll be back in one form or another before the decade is out. She lives for this shit. As a fellow lifer, I can't help but respect that.
