I know he's cancelled, but this album really did stand the test of time*.

* except Bengali in Platforms. Jesus Christ, what was THAT?!

Why leave THAT on and get rid of THE ORDINARY BOYS? Did KYLIE SUE?

I hope we’re going to have a CHOOSE AND DISCUSS YOUR FAVOURITE RACIST thread and poll. Mine is WALT DISNEY and I like to have Disney posters all over my apartment with racist slogans daubed on them :disco:

Darling I know EL MOZIARTY is the BERNARD MANNING OF POP but I DON'T CARE. Although he hasn't made a decent record forever but then apart from the MUCH-MISSED LAUGHING LENNY C name me another OLD CUNT who HAS!

The discussion around "Bengali In Platforms" at the time seems remarkably tin-eared now. It was considered clumsy more than anything else - Morrissey was felt to be saying "mate, this place is a shithole, you're wasting your time, these morons will never accept you" and the song considered a comment on the UK's toxic culture. But the song was so unremarkable (even with a completely different lyric, it would be the lowest point on side 1) that it almost drifted past. Almost.

That bit that goes "don't hate me just because I am the one to tell you" translates as "just saying". Which spears a good faith interpretation.

Alsatian Cousin is still fucking amazing tho'. It really was a shocker as an opener, especially given reports that Morrissey had rejected a Marr tune during the recording of SHWC for being too heavy. For Mr "burn down the disco" to open with a funky "White Lines" bassline with wild, feedbacking guitar felt like a real left turn.
Everyday Is Like Sunday is marvellous, as is Late Night Maudlin Street.

But, really, I find it had to listen to him at all these days.

A note upon his desk,
'P.S. Bring me home and have me'
Leather elbows on a tweed coat
Oh, is that ht best you can do?
So came his reply,
'But on the desk is WHERE I WANT YOU'
So I ASK
Even though I KNOW
Were you and he LOVERS?
