Anne Hathaway as a spellbinding pop star in her 80s Mugler-esque retro religious creations are futuristic flashes of magnificence to the faces of the beguiled.
The rest doesn't hang anywhere near as impressively. I almost saw it as an In Fanbric (2018) origins story in my attempt to keep myself from switching off.
But hang on in there you must. We get Burial and the sublime My Mouth Is Lonely For You, but are promised the greatest song in history for the finale. Do we get it? No, the credits roll.
One more song piece/number is performed, but I'd argue it should have been the opener and an even more amped up Burial be the finale. A film that didn't know what to do with itself and instead is an impressive visual EP extended into a film that plunged to unforgivable levels of boredom. That an on stage hanging happens so underwhelmingly in such a theatrical setting is the film's biggest travesty of all.
The peaks will almost all go onto YouTube uploads with the most unexpected delight being a dance rehearsal eerily shadowing the choreography of GALA's Faraway music video. Watch both and you'll agree.
