457 ABBA - I Still Have Faith In You

I still recall that warm September evening of 2021, when ABBA dropped their first new music in almost forty years. It was a very special time for me as a huge fan of ABBA (I can probably offer detailed write-ups on every ABBA track that appears). A dignified, age appropriate love note to themselves. I would guess most the plays were from around that week, as I rarely listen now, but it hit the moment nicely.

 
456 Aaliyah - More Than A Woman (2001)

A rare posthumous no.1 hit, but honestly this distinctivly futurustic off-kilter Timbaland production, saved it from being just that alone. Effortless vocal, what a sad young loss, another one of Diddy's crimes (allegedly).

 
455 Garbage - Stupid Girl (1995)

First of two appearances from my favourite band as a teenager. I had a whole bedroom wall dedicated to Shirley Manson, just looking iconic. Bit of a 'only 10/10 rather than higher' song choice to appear here, but I'm more likely to play either of the first two glorious albums in full. There's not a weak spot on EITHER :disco:

God that song felt ubiquitous on the radio at the time (think I was Clyde radio at this point - Atlantic 252 was very much for in the car). Absolutely marvelous. That riff is utter filth and Shirley's surly delivery serving cunt (as in cunt).
 
I don't think MayKay did flop in asfm (I'm sure I gave it good points). It's a real moment and quite a build up.

It really was a surprise radio hit. It wasn't inevitable.
 
Surprised as I thought maybe there was a homegrown support element in Scotland. For example, Mary Kiäni got lots of radio play for When I Call Your Name and I don't think the song caught on quite as much down south.
 
454 Chicane/ Natasha Bedingfield - Bruised Water (2008)

Mash-ups were a hot trend around this time. Bedingfield was absolutely destined for the dancefloor, over whatever genre I Wanna Have Your Babies was.

It's three in the morning
But it never is.

The original version is obviously highly passable queer tuned pop. Definitely in the background as I was busy coming out.



The Motiv 8 remix however, which is my go to, is top tier tits out poppers o' clock hot backroom fun.

 
Oh Motiv8 was a great fit for her. She kind of hung somewhere in between Alison Moyet's Whispering Your Name and BRM'S Your Loving Arms when I first heard her solo. Had zero clue she was the one belting all those TTF tunes I had loved only a few years earlier. She's an absolute riot - this woman really needs to get herself on UK TV.

Now that’s a tune. The EFM mix is the one that caused me to spill onto a dancefloor in a frenzy but the Motiv8 mix is IT too. All Mary’s singles got proper play time in the NI gay clubs @straightorbroken but I think there’s always been a general crossover between the NI/Scotland dance scene.

What age are you BFS? I think Mary's club play had dried up by the time I made it to the clubs in 2002. Can't believe I've never managed to see her when she comes back to Glasgow: she seems rather fond on playing at a bar called Waterloo.

Bruised Water is marvellous, but best in its bootleg form which used the original Saltwater. The official version felt just had a tad more anaemic.

You imagine correct. Aside from Prince (because it's not a fair fight when Prince is involved), Groove Armada are the greatest live act I've ever seen. Saw them at Brixton Academy at the height of their powers and it was a truly insane experience. And "Superstylin'" was next level. It had never been a favourite of mine from them, but once I saw it live, it all made sense.

The live version of this become something of legend over the years, with one performance from Glastonbury supposedly one of the best moments of that festival ever. I'm not sure which version though, there's been a few. Here is the Brixton gig I was lucky enough to attend:

Lyrically the song certainly hits home after a terrible year for my mental health, where loneliness despite my half decent circumstances became central to my being. 450 Sparks - Number One Song In Heaven (1979)

Sparks went disco, brought in Giorgio Moroder and created a camp masterpiece. Donna Summer died for this. Heavenly.

448 Adele - Hello (2015)

You can pretend you don't care for her, but she's always there (five year break pending) with an absolute banger of a power ballad, that we just don't fed anymore. It's no wonder she rivaled Simon and Gar @funky for most weeks at no.1. Enjoy the LA sunshine girl, you've earned it. Even better, I imagine since they deported James Cordon. Best use of an inappropriate communications device since Kelly Rowland opened a spreadsheet.

 
446 Diana Ross - I'm Coming Out (1980)

Released just 10 days after I was born, I presume an ode to my arrival. Nile Rogers has since entirely made up that it was about drag queens, and Diana Ross quite rightly burst into tears when told it was about fags. She's since pretended she supports gay people. Woke nonsense if you ask me. Either way, an absolute disco belter, sheer elegance, pure joy.

 
I never cared for that Ross track. Rubbish gay, I know. Love Hangover however is the tits.

Upside Down is of course the best ever Diana song.
 
447 Heller & Farley Project - Ultra Flava (1996)

The work of British producers, with a very American sounding house track. Lots of pleasing 90's dance music sound effects, synthesised whooshes and beeps. Allegedly the Ultra in Ultra Flava is a nod to Ultra Nate no less.

 
445 Hot Chip Ready For The Floor (2008)

From the short lived Indie dance craze, that left us with such greats as The Gossip, Hot Chip and just so many other unforgettable names. I had the album, it was fine. Notable for the main line "you're my number one guy" being nicked from Batman and then grotesquely adapted in Succession years later.
