I like Marry the Night (and most of BTW) but it seemed like a silly single choice. The video was a bit overwrought, I kind of went off her at that point.

Enjoy the Silence would be on my all time list too. A classic!

What a podium.

The video got in the way of Marry the Night. I'd have gone with a homage to The Warriors (1979) and Cruising (1980) and called it a classic.

Cappella sampling Souxsie & The Banshees before Gaga. The most stabbingy stabbing synths I can think of. The delirium of it all.

Enjoy the Silence could well be the most perfect pop song of all. Gahan was somehow the sexiest bastard alive when the Mode were in this mode. I guess cocks are for your ears sometimes.

Let's continue, with a Kylie double whammy! Two polar opposite examples of how to launch a new campaign. I love Into The Blue but the whole campaign lacked confidence and cohesivenes. Besides it felt like she was harking back to past glories.

Padam, is in it's own stratosphere. It's one of her best "selling" singles (the charts are so confusing these days etc etc). She'd been trying to get a viral hit on and off for a while, and by the love of Kylie she did it. Not necessarily a favourite of mine, but the video is fun and I appreciate my queen getting her dues 36 years into her career.



 
367 Disclosure ft Sam Smith - Latch (2012)

The only acceptable reason to listen to Sam Smith. I really do like this mid tempo house bop, but looking back it was a step towards the horrors of Tropical House that musically haunted the decade.

 
I'm definitely partial to the twinkly Into the Blue, but the icy electro gloss of Padam Padam was a bold and nifty revival of her aiming forward rather than coasting on a proven formula by comparison.

“Latch” and “Try Sleeping” are those artists’ best ever tracks IMO and both would definitely be in my Top 500.

Latch is singular. Funny how it wasn’t a massive hit at the time but still launched their career, has gone on to prove immensely influential and has endured as their biggest song.

I remember the love when that Alicia Keys song dropped, right in the midst of a peak run for her with the Empire State song. I think it was my favourite song of that year. At a time when R&B artists were compromising their sound with EDM and synths, she incorporated just enough to stay on the right side of authentic but updated her sound from neo-soul to nostalgic pop-soul. It was perfect.

Please explain Alice Chater?

I dabbled in this obvious nonsense mainly due to the half decent Don't You Want Me Sample. I make no apologies; on re-listening it slaps and tickles in a quite a cheap and pleasant way.

 
364 Jennifer Lopez ft Pitbull - On The Floor (2011)

Mama J-Lo wanted a hit. Utilising rent-a-rapper Pitbull, the on trend EDM sound, and a sample of the ultimate Latino 80s anthem Lambada, everything went her way.

There's no two ways about it, this glossy hedonistic banger is an unapologetic, thumping, four to the floor, big scale dance pop track and it was rightly absolutely huge.

363 Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way (1977)

One of two tracks from Rumours on this list. Tense, accusatory, deeply personal, radio-friendly pop rock. I do appear to be somewhat out of step with what Gen Z fabours, this has occasionally skimmed the tail end of recent charts, and is not one of the three tracks currently on the UK top 100.

 
362 Dina Carroll - Don't Be A Stranger (1993)

Back to some elegant, string heavy early 90s balladry. At the time Dina was up there with Gabrielle, M People and Annie Lennox yet has very little name or face recognition with modern audiences. So Close was jam packed with hits, sold 1.5 million, yet she faded away quickly with the turn of the century.

Following the anniversary of "David's Dead", this popped up on my Twitter feed yesterday. So she was plying her trade when Davied Gest was alive!

By the way, what a line-up!

I love Dina & Don't Be A Stranger is a wonderful signature song, sadly it doesn't even get much radio play on the nostalgia stations now :( I'd love to see her make a comeback, if Louise can get stuff out there then so can Dina.

She was more than capable of putting her voice down on a dance track. Based on that she could easily put her voice on anything.

I suspect, she withdrew from public life, by choice rather than trend changes. Nearly everyone of that era has at least attempted some kind of comeback. Aside from the David Gest stuff, there's virtually nothing from her in the last 25 years :(
 
360 Chicane ft Tom Jones - Stoned In Love (2006)

What a meeting of worlds, German trance producer Chicane (real name Nick Bracegirdle :disco:) meets Welsh granddad Jones, most famous for belting out for huge ballads in the 60s. What a result, @ButterTart is still on medication recovering. I always assumed the verses were sung by someone else, but no it was Tom himself, singing in a different register. Impressive stuff

He met Elvis. Did you know that? He never likes to mention it.

Have a feeling this feel good, hands around the world, euphoric dance pop will have some fans on here.

Last seen not entering Eurovision and in a legal dispute with her mother.

She really shook off the shackles of the bouncy fun pop of Call Me Maybe and hanging around with the far too wholesome Tom Hanks and provided us with a wanking anthem (or self empowerment if you're @disneyteletubby). Good for her. Her post success career really set a template for what was possible with just online gays and sad girls for support.

For 8 year old Ag, this was my template for future love, even though I had no idea what it was all about, it sounded good.

Pretty sure that Hoffs probably meant to give this away, at it doesn't really sit with the rest of their catalogue. Still it snuck through and became a megahit. The lyrics could easily have been plucked from a teen girl romance novel. Twee? maybe. Sweet and harmonious? Definitely.

Watch the performance. No stunts, no big props, no phones. Just young people having a good time.

I was working at her local book shop in Nicosia at the time. She told me she needed about fifty books for a project. I was very disappointed to see they were used to make a rudimentary bench.

Crazy to think Stranger was quite far in to her album campaign and was a remix. I'd also saddle her in with Eternal in terms of status.

Eternal Flame. Hoffs tried to pinch a song Cyndi Lauper had recorded with Steinberg (Unconditional Love). When Steinberg explained she couldn't have it, he told her "we'll write something better" and that song was Eternal Flame (Elvis was the inspiration) and Hoffs would later record Unconditional Love for her solo album anyway.

Love Stoned in Love. Kinda wish they'd let Cher have a go at it, but Tom is fantastic when letting rip and showing atypical restraint on the verses.

Sam hit an unexpected jackpot here. I assume her awful personality stopped there being more where it came from, bless her.

And Aliyaah. Like an rnb robo-pop Karen Carpenter to my ears. Her Timbaland collabs were something else and exciting as hell when hearing for the first time.
