329 Kate Ryan - Je T'Adore (2006)

I warned you things were about to heat up and who better than professional French woman, Moopy's favourite Belgian Kate Ryan? I know.

Easily one of the biggest shock semi final exits of all time at Eurovision. An established pop star, with an absolute belter of a dance pop track was a lock on for top 5 (that's my recollection), when she faltered. Still quite rightly beloved by many fans.

The best bit of the performance is when the editors chose to broadcast the Green Room floor for a whole second.

328 Christina Aguilera - Genie In A Bottle (1999)

With retrospect, it's impressive that she moved from this teen pop anthem about keeping it in your knickers (in a sexy way), to shameless titilation, general unruliness and all around filth in just one album campaign.

A confident and bombastic debut, thankfully she held back her honking here, and treated us all to her pop timbre.

327 Strawberry Switchblade - Since Yesterday (1985)

Brightly coloured mid 80s new wave pop, without the dour baggage of some that came before them. Naturally the lyrics express heartbreak, but the music says sunny afternoon in the park.

Head to toe in ribbons and polka dots, their styling gothic Victorian yet the epitome of the 80s

Brilliant pop.

 
Kate R: eurotrash excellence.

Xtina: best served via The Strokes bootleg, otherwise I only really like the groaning bits in its original form.

Strawberry: adorably sulky.

Short answer: no.

Long answer: I didn't know we'd get to 10 pages, and that there were would be enough interest. It would be a lot to do, especially now I'm back at work. I did the original list when I wasn't working. I'll see what I can do, I have thought about it.

I saw this live a few years ago.



Wasn't at the Barbican. In fact the Barbican was quite a sedate, thoughtful affair. When he started touring it and it hit Manchester, it was a full on raucous gig. Sasha absolutely can rock a live show.

This being dropped was incredible:



And I always like his Involver version of Smile. In fact I had a "did not know that" moment to it. They did Smile and Rodriguez Jr came out to do vocals. Now I know him from his productions but his vocals were just like the ones on The Youngsters original... and then I googled it and discovered that Rodriguez Jr started off in The Youngsters.

This one was peak Deep Dish era. They were popping up everywhere and managed to straddle that "vocal but also darkly thunky" divide so well.

It's a shame that the music scene went the way it did for Heller & Farley. Junior Boys Own was such a pivotal label: Xpress 2, Chemical Brothers, Heller & Farley running things plus releasing as Fire Island, Roach Motel... it was big. And so many great tracks throughout it.

Then the US house scene went all smooth and too smooth, which they followed, but the music industry eye wildly pivoted over onto the big prog house thing that exploded in the 00's. JBO rebranded as Junior, then with the colour red - had some STELLAR releases under that guise, but when prog dwindled and it went all euro-bleep, Junior just vanished.

The Ultra Nate nod comes from it originally being an Ultra Nate remix (or dub) that may or may not have been released. It was hidden away on an EP of theirs called Tales From The DAT where they collected a bunch of unreleased things:


Never had a vocal to start with (which was better imo).

I think I tended to prefer them as Roach Motel, nowadays at least:

This is one of my all time favourites. I still love it now. The way it slows down in the middle. Waaaay better than the full vocal Morales versions to the point a clip of it made it on the album I believe. I mix this with Morales' own Philadelphia afterwards.
 
Deep Dish really were very busy and influential in the mid 90s. I am looking forward to a deep dive into some of their other projects in my 90s thread shortly.

Well they've reformed of recent but... it kind of went off the boil for me around the time George Is On came out. Anything around their peak Yoshiesque era was outstanding. These are still well worth pulling out!



 
Keep an eye on my 90s thread as well @WiDGe-> ... it's a bit of everything as well but I am covering the evolution of house in both the UK and US... only up to 1993 at the moment so mostly covered italo, rave and just coming up to euro dance stuff, but once we hit 1995 we know how many dance acts were releasing anything and everything and there's sure to be some newly unearthed rare grooves coming up :disco: well, maybe not new to you, but to me!

It's lush. Full on mid 90s US house.
 
Haven't stopped being obsessed by that remix ever since it came out - imagine if she had retained that voice, the comebacks would have been whenever she felt like it. Kygo almost did it twice with Tina Turner, but it was very stop-starty and instantly dismissed by me anyway. His a-ha remix was... nice.

In the UK, the follow up to five week no.1 I Should Be So Lucky, this started a career of many no.2 hits. Long forgotten by most of the public in favour of almost everything else from her initial assent to super stardom. Not me though, although I conceed this could have worked given to Bananarama, Sonia, or Jason, it's still a bop.
