What do you fucking expect? It's a character alias, I'm hardly going to post in exactly the same way.

77 Kylie Minogue - In My Arms (2008)

We had a sneaking regard around this time, that someone in her record company was playing silly buggers when this was the third single taken from X, after 2 Hearts and Wow. Make that make sense.

It's mad because this is the glorious synthy, dance pop that made Kylie superstar just a few years before. They even had Calvin Harris on board to give it an extra sparkle.

 
76 Robert Miles feat Maria Nayler - One & One (1996)

We all know this was originally recorded by Edyta Górniak, star of Eurovision, and generally well loved star in her homeland of Poland, until she became a covid conspiracy nut.

Thankfully Miles got his pizza greased mitts on it and hauled in unknown British singer Naylor to blast us into a state of ethereal melancholia. I took a dive in Nayler not so long ago, it turns out she's not the placid new age type I was expecting, more a chirpy, Essex lass, who was just thrilled to experience her dabble with fame and is still performing - so good for her.






 
75 Pet Shop Boys - Go West (1993)

The Pet Shop Boys simply outgayed even themselves here. They even outgayed the bloody Village People. In an astonishing but savvy move, this cover combined the by now expected PSB sincerity and grandeur, with Soviet era visuals in a pop dance track that offered a knowing wink to the right people.

Probably their last big hit and when I saw them back in the 00s was their closing number. The diva vocals by long term collaborator Sylvia Mason-James saw her dressed as a black Statue of Liberty which is worth the entrance fee alone.

 
I can understand why Go West became a hit, but it's not a PSB song I'd ever choose to play. Possibly my least favourite of their imperial era singles.

I was surprised to see it so high, but it's probably tied in with nostalgia. It was the second CD single I ever bought (the first was Freddie Mercury :disco:), so it got a lot of spins.

I just look back fondly to a time when a piece of sincere camp pop could make the top 5. The PSB have dozens of amazing songs, and there are certainly others I appreciate more, but the playcounts don't lie!

I didn't get a hifi with a CD player till Christmas 1995. I think my first CD single was probably Return Of The Mack :o
 
I never cared for In My Arms. Not when The One was right there.

Go West may have been at the root of my lifelong fascination with Russia.

74 Robyn - With Every Heartbeat (2007)

The respect Robyn earns within the music industry really begins here. Sad disco wasn’t quite the thing it is now, so as something relatively unusual at the time, it had little choice but to reach number one.

I have extremely fond memories of this, well sort of. I absolutely got caught up with online/ Moopy excitement around it and then... I was stuck in isolation in hospital for over a week. I had a serious infection and worse no Internet. I did have a little battery operated radio to keep me company. From my hospital bed, my spirits were lifted when on Sunday she climbed to no.1. I was gutted I couldn't see the Moopy reaction, but I was pleased the world outside my isolation room was on my side.

73 Technotronic - Pump Up the Jam (1989)

The Iranian Embassy siege took place from 30 April to 5 May 1980, after a group of six armed men stormed the Iranian embassy on Prince's Gate in South Kensington, London. This occurred nine years before the release of unrelated techno anthem Pump Up The Jam.

 
72 a-ha - Take On Me (1985)

All together now... doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo... were talking away...

What's left to say? Well I would recommend taking a look at the original video before the VERY famous one, to see Morten all oiled up, his vest torn to shreds, with nowhere to go.

Desperately sad to know he'll probably never sing live again, due to a side effect from his Parkinson's treatment.



 
I have binged on the 2 big a-ha songs so hard recently. It's the other one that strikes most fatal though.

Robyn and Kleerup really created something special - the way it aches and echos a ballad into feeling like a weakened heart being pumped back to life through pulsating electronica.

The Sun Always Shines on TV is one my earliest contemporary pop memories. The "touch me..." bit was just so mesmerising.

71 ABBA - Summer Night City (1978)

More ABBA and it's an absolute belter. Sadly demoted to the lead of More ABBA Gold, within the legacy of ABBA. Famously one derided by themselves, and critics at the time - I just hear glorious 70s europop/ disco by the masters of their craft.



 
70 ABBA - The Day Before You Came (1982)

Sssh don't tell the plebs about this. The crowning jewel of deep ABBA for the fanz only.

Their final single for forty years, and what a swan song. Now we're used to vague attention posts online, back then vagueness was a thrilling mystery to be resolved and this told you everything and nothing at all. I swear there's an amazing Brit flick to be made with multiple storylines experiencing different days before you came, with various versions of this played throughout. I've thought about it a lot.

Either way, file it under ABBA masterpieces. It's their long form novel, it's their centrepiece in the Louvre, that critics and academics muse over for decades. Is it a lover, is it a killer, is an international pandemic? They'll never tell.

 
69 Kylie Minogue - Confide In Me (1994)

Confidently walking away from her imperial phase into her sort of indie phase. While there are absolute moments among the wilderness years, and she needed to do it to become the bonafide megastar she became, and I hate to say it, but she peaked with the first single.

It had it all, it was excitingly intimate, sensual even, it mixed trip hop with a smoky shisha vibes and cool art pop aesthetic.

An absolute classic within her incredible back catalogue.

I will now always associate this song with a crying Siberian bear.

 
It's both unsettling and utterly soothing. A downbeat masterpiece. Wish the album had better to go with it (although I think it's her best album for vocal performance).
 
68 Sash! - Encore Une Fois (1997)

The promised glut of Eurodance begins. The DJ has returned was a massive misnoemer, as a) Sash! is a collective b) they hadn't been anywhere.

Either way this eurofication of Insomnia was a massive smash, twice no less, later featuring Molly of rabbit in the headlights fame.



 
67 Real McCoy - Run Away (1993/1995)

The follow up to Another Night was a delightful rush of europop in the vein of said single. Serving that melancholy and euphoria in equal doses, that somehow is a particularly European trick.

The UK edit was a lot smoother than the original. I absolutely prefer the original, it's a bit messier, chunkier and more techno-pop than trance.

I need both versions of Runaway. I probably prefer the version we got, but the adrenaline and addition "yeah-eee-yeah-eee-yeah-ahhs" are hard to go without when you go back. I don't think the video is still live, but I did chop it up into one mix for my Sorbvision 1 results extravagala - what a time to have been alive, etc.

Anyway, these days Amber has made sure I'm aware how talentless and crooked these guys are only by mentioning it every day in her internet Facebook mic drops, but there's no denying they had a plethora of classics in that initial flurry from them.
