Natalie Imbruglia - Algorithm (Album #7) (13 Viewers)

I forgot if the CD I bought from Amazon has the bonus tracks. Last time I went to HMV was late 2023 when I was new to buying CDs (standard version of The Very Best of Enya was also £13.99 😅)
 
Catastrophe is one of my favorites. Along with Jesus On Mars and Debbie.
My least favorite has to be Sounds Like Its Feels. It's lovely but the lyrics are less interesting than the others
 
I've listened a few times and it's a grower. The first listen it wasn't working for me. But the melodies are beginning to pop.

But this is a pure electro pop record. Not very Natalie esq so will take time to get used too.

At the moment I don't think it's as strong lyrically or musically as Firebird where she seemed to have alot to say and was a real statement comeback for me. People who dislike firebird should maybe listen to the back end of it more. Songs like the title track are amoungst the best she has produced and she sounds great.

Not sure on her vocals on this record. Knowing how good she can be or was it's all a bit too Britney/Kyle for me. Don't think the record shows her voice in the best light and that is my main gripe. She still works her magic with melodies though.

I've ordered the vinyl anyway with a signed insert. Through thick and thin I have to support this beautiful and talented woman. She had my heart from a very young age 😍
 
So I've listened to the album in full a couple of times and I really like a lot of it. It's inoffensive and a nice pleasant listen for the most part.

There isn't anything hugely adventurous on it though and overall I’m not sure if I prefer it to Firebird.

Stand outs: Debbie, Upside Down (I know I’m in the minority here), parts of Catastrophe, Endgame and Beautiful Love.

Unlike the previous poster I’ve never really considered her an exceptional vocalist and there are are times such as on the bridge of Just Drive or on Jesus on Mars where she just sounds downright unpleasant. The electro pop sound doesn’t always work for her either - I maintain the spoken word on Algorithm is one of the most cringeworthy things I’ve ever heard (what is it with that accent?!)
 
I finally got my CD today 🤗💿 haha I opened it backwards so it was her hand reaching out. Very pretty colours, it's like Left of the Middle as I think I mentioned before but more lively.
I've started listening out loud on my laptop, and have got up to the title track. They're all good, Debbie's the best so far, and Catastrophe wasn't as catastrophic as I was anticipating (though I'll listen through earphones to confirm). ☺️ 🎶
 
No 4 for the midweeks is unbelievable for her first indie release! I am thrilled for her.

It's definitely grown on me more since my last post. The production is better than Firebird and the bass is really punchy. Particularly good played loud in a half decent car system. Now struggling to find a track I don't like. Nothing seems like cheap filler here. Particularly fond of Debbie and Endgame out of the non singles at the moment. Breath with The Fire Lola is fit for a late night club, like nothing she's done before and it's FIRE. Her albums always seem to end so strong picking you up and taking you some place else just before you think it might slump. It's not like she is just fitting 3 good numbers on the front and the rest is drizzle like so many.

Actually knowing that Algorithm's her first independent release and it's at #5 in midweek charts is quite awesome! 🤩

Exclusive Deluxe CD (Inc. Signed Insert)" as sold via artist's own store. However, it wasn't exclusive and was also sold via HMV and Amazon in the UK, again marked as "exclusive" to each of those retailers, but with a different bonus track listed ('Falling Birds') in pre-order information. All three CD's are exactly the same and none of them contain this additional track, just a signed insert. It is also available from other stores without the signed insert.

I listened to this. Catastrophe and Endgame were awful. why is she so into these drab, chant-y choruses? she doesn't have an ounce of emotion in her voice when she sings like that. Debbie was fine and Beautiful Love probably the best thing here, but I do think her way with melody has gone completely out of the window sadly. it made for a tough listen.

always happy to see her keep going mind you, even if she's not for me anymore. a top 10 on Friday would be a great result.
 
Haha I get it with the Endgame 'what are you waiting for' that sounds like Oasis 😅 but the rest of the song's fine.

And yeah I like Catastrophe that way too. Not a go-to song but not irritating to me either. Perhaps with not being any of heartless/party/normal (neurotypical) people she sings about there. :D
 
Looking through the TV interviews here (I think One Show was 31st July, I was listening to Just Drive in a bus shelter that day haha).



That one and what I've seen on Channel 5 were fine but BBC Breakfast and Good Morning Britain were quite awkward 😅 (by presenters' responses; ignorance mostly.)

A February gig at the Palladium for the London adjacent. She’s not someone I would book a flight and hotel to see but would definitely go and see her at my convenience.

 
I'm lucky that Natalie played in Leeds, but like you I don't think I would travel to see her either. Maybe Manchester at a push but no further.
 
Who Dimmed The Lights is sweet. ☺️

Despite the subject matter, the instrumental seems rather bright and breezy. 🤗🎶🌬♡
 
Just received my very pretty vinyl.

I didn't realise that Beautiful Love was written by Fraser T Smith and Gary Lightbody, whereas most of the rest of the album is Natalie and David Sneddon.

Explains why that's far and away the best track on there. Shame the budget presumably couldn't cover them working together for a whole album.
 
Just checked to see where it ranked according to her discography and initially thought it might be her lowest charting record until I noticed her album Come To Life never charted at all! What happened there?
