The one year plus delay we had at the time must have helped. By the time the wedding episode aired in the UK, Kylie had already left the show in Australia and was a fully fledged pop star.

I didn’t realise the delay was as much as that. I watched from the start but in Ireland we had a much smaller delay and when I used to visit back home in the 90’s I always remember us being significantly in front. Not quite on the same trajectory as Australia but months in front of the UK.

Yeah, Kylie’s last episode in Australia aired in July 1988, but here it was November 1989, and the wedding episode was July 1987 vs November 1988 for us.

I fancy Aaron quite a lot, so I endure David.

I think my least favourite couple are/were Roxy and Kyle. The joy when I heard they were leaving was dampened immediately though by the news of the show being cancelled.
 
What are the chances of any channel repeating the whole damn thing?
 
Just watching The Newsreader on iPlayer (which I'm enjoying so far) and MADGE FUCKING BISHOP pops up.

Home and Away still gets over a million viewers a day in Australia so I am assuming going back 34? years ago it would have regularly been well surpassing 2 million viewers per day considering the massive drop in viewing figures across the board in that time.

Apparently in terms of consistency over a year, 1995-96 was Home and Away's peak (averaging 1,560,000 viewers per episode) of their Australian viewership whereas 1987-1989 represented Neighbours' Australian peak. Their highest rated episode was in 2005 however with 1.77 million viewers.

So yeah, at its peak, Neighbours outperformed H&A. Kylie didn't get Australia's highest selling single of the 80s for nothing!

I stand corrected but my original point still stands that the episode wasn’t as popular in Australia comparatively as it was in the UK. Almost a 3rd of the population watched it here.
 
Well their highest watched show ever rated at a comparatively miniscule 3.91 million viewers (in 2021) so apples and oranges and all that.

Home and Away is definitely more popular in Australia than Neighbours, for the past twenty or so years anyway. Though oddly I wouldn’t say either have been huge the past decade, perhaps more nostalgic and just well known due to their length.

On ratings, it’s fair to say that Neighbours has always been a hit in the UK (taking into context time and broadcast network). It just couldn’t survive being funded by and for one market. Home and Away always felt like the ‘Wish’ version in the UK and its ratings bear that out.

That's nothing, I only just discovered today that she'd been in EMMERDALE for a while.
 
Incidentally Anne Charleston also pops up in the new George Miller/Tilda Swinton vehicle.

The production really could not have got this ending more spot on (so far). Neighbours was always good at laughing at itself but it has wonderfully leaned into its legacy this last few weeks.

Yeah I only watch Home & Away. My mum watches both. I'm going to watch the last Neighbours episode.

I'm very concerned H&A will be next to go.

I actually thought Neighbours was more popular but I may be wrong.

I've watched H&A for god knows how many years. But then it moved from ITV to Ch5 and I had to stop watching it for a couple of years because the island couldn't get channel 5 :(

Once I got Sky I was able to watch it again and haven't looked back since.

No it doesn’t! Any show in Australia would be lucky to get close to 1million viewers these days. The only things that get close are the news and Married at First Sight :eyes:
For example H&A managed around 400,000 last Thursday to get the 11th highest rating show for the day. It’s usually a lot lower.
 
I did think that was bullshit.

Clearly, Home & Away has remained relatively popular in Australia whereas Neighbours' popularity fell off a cliff after the late 80s/early 90s heyday.

NOT ME. As of 2017 it was still getting 1 million viewers per day.

Even in 2017 it would have been lucky to be getting a million a day. Maybe every so often. Furthest I can go back is 2019 when it was getting about 500,000 a day.
 
Since streaming took over everything crashed apart from the news and live sport. I would imagine that would be a similar case in most countries.

I don't think the news dominates here in quite the same way, but it's certainly true that news is relatively more successful than it was previously. Big dramas and live events/event TV (including sport) are routinely the biggest shows in the UK, unless there aren't any of those on, in which case Corrie will probably snatch the #1, but with a fraction of the audience it had years ago.

I am only using google and Wikipedia like our @Eddie and know you live there so will be a lot more in tune with the ratings than I would. Interestingly I found this article from 2022? 🤷‍♀️ I understand it was paired with the winter olympics hence the surge but a 27% increase would mean it was still getting around 700k viewers now so the 1 million in 2017 may not have been far out.
