Some of that line-up are laughable. Steve Barclay? Does he even cast a shadow?

From a good of the country etc etc I would spring for Tugendaht but the people the Conservative party actually need are long gone.

Nothing exceptional or unique, but a dedication to Brexit (above everything else) and a chronic parochialism, no matter what the broader cost.

It’s an approach which colours absolutely everything, as far as I can tell (I am more than a decade out of my role now), but it means a government which doubles down on Brexit and leadership candidates who can only talk in narrow terms (1) getting the former done; and (2) tax cuts, yet no broader ambition for the country, particularly when it comes to infrastructure, which should be so much easier than it is to implement. Why is it when we have the second highest tides on the planet that we have no tidal power plants? A failure like that epitomises just how pathetic the party is. A total dearth of pragmatism and, crucially, imagination.

This is why I don’t think anybody should worry about the party re-emerging which a change of leadership, as the problems run so deep (and at the same time run against rapid demographic change which will make this type of politics increasingly fringe).


It cannot be repeated enough that the UK economy has not grown, in real terms, in a decade, and neither have household incomes. That should be unforgivable.

Why was I ever a Tory? :D

I have a good friend who I almost fell out with over the 2015 election results. She had voted Tory all her life and now she's a solid socialist (since meeting and marrying her husband) I can't even imagine changing political alliance, although I've voted for three different parties - I'm a committed anti-Tory. It's so utterly fascinating to me.

Question: did Ben Wallace really oppose gay marriage, and if so has he been confronted about it since, and has he commented on it?

On 5 Mar 2014:Ben Wallace voted against making same sex marriage available to armed forces personnel outside the UK.

On 21 May 2013:Ben Wallace voted against allowing same sex couples to marry.

On 5 Feb 2013:Ben Wallace voted against allowing same sex couples to marry.

On 19 Mar 2007:Ben Wallace voted no on Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations

Unless we plan on heading in a USA style direction of politics, nobody with this sort of history should ever be allowed to Prime Minister.

He has more recently suggested that he was wrong and that his past views were ‘a load of rubbish’. It’s still not great but it’s better than it could be.

Someone who votes repeatedly and consistently on the same issue can say what he wants, it suggests a pattern of a certain attitude and behaviour that only "changes" to suit his own cause. A wolf in sheep's clothing, just like Boris. His record speaks for itself. Fuck him.

Somebody called John Baron (WHO?) was interviewed on Channel 4 news last night and claimed he had been approached about standing and would be taking soundings. The reporter barely stopped himself from laughing in his face.
 
Penny’s silence throughout everything still makes me think she’s about to mount a challenge. I wonder if she’s going to let it all play out early and see what happens first.

It is really interesting to me to consider my two closest Tory MPs are female and in the running.
 
How racist is the BIGOTED OLD TORY PARTY these days? Does a black woman called Kemi stand any chance of winning over their crusty masses, or will she be OK as long as she goes out of her way to deny things like institutional racism, and say how slavery was OK actually and we should keep all the statues of slave traders up because they instilled a great work ethic in her ancestors etc etc?

I am actually quite concerned about Kemi Badenoch. She is every bit as dangerous as the likes of Suella but more covert with it. She could do well.
