Finished acorn cup. Didn't realise you could just listen to the music (thwomp ruins would be my favourite). Piranha Plant Cove was probably the best to look at of that lot.

Madrid was fun, particularly the town square and football pitch (that they should do with the inevitable Metroid track as a reference to that infamous 3da spin off).

Hated the Rosalina track on MK7, but much easier to control. Retro really did deliver such a perfunctory installment for the 3ds in my opinion. Nice to look at - maybe I'll pop CH ER on and play the snow levels next month.

Rainbow done right is a jackpot. Not jaw dropping, but the sparkly flourishes were nice and much improved over the Wii's driving difficulty.

Did anyone watch the Indie Direct, and if so, was it any good? I can't believe I can't muster any urge to watch it right now (really unthinkable for all of Switch's life cycle up until now).

I skimmed through it - it looked fairly consistent with the last few. Some games with interesting concepts, most of which are doomed to get quietly released and subsequently buried in the eShop's unwieldy catacombs.

I've been holding off buying eShop games at the moment (most notably Sea Of Stars, which people are raving about) because I assume a Switch 2 - whenever it arrives - will not have the function to re-download them.

Bayonetta 3 for £25 anyone? It's in a 2 for £20 offer at game. The only other non download code in a box is a retro shooter otherwise priced at £12, and postage is £5, so I opted for Assassin's Creed Black Flag (download code).

I had assumed my Switch had fallen, but on Facebook I've seen someone post their own and that it has a swollen battery. I've been playing mine like this for weeks. Is it safe?

Nintendo take them in, but I assume they then wack you with a bill. I've sent an email before initiating the UPS collection. In the meantime I totally forgot I have 3 Switch units anyway. I do hope my red one doesn't go the same way, but I've never heard of such a catastrophe. And now that I've docked it, see the battery is completely drained (which I believe is what causes the pregnant battery thing).

The rumour was a delay until 2025 for the Switch successor, but I'd argue a partner showcase indicates that there is no such delay (if that's the word) for the expected end-of-2024 release window.

I think it runs a little poorly, but one act in and I did enjoy it even if it was easy and a button bash, plus I didn't like seeing I had missed a star and had no way of going back. I don't see a £50 game here and I honestly don't think I'd even bite at the standard £33 digital discount. No idea how many more levels there are, but will go again soon.

Princess Peach's ribbon jumps and ribbons attack are making me think a re-skin hack and calling the game I'm Right On Top of That Rose: Street Fighter Showtime would be just the ticket.

Well if that doesn't confirm MP4 as a cross gen game nothing does. Looks so good.

I don't play any of the Mario Party games, but even that had quite a few things that enticed me (not enough to buy though).

DKC - yes please.

Zelda - hell yes please (it was almost a bit like Animal Crossing as a combat skill, but also with elements of Trine, and yes it did look a little janky in places, so I was hella suprised at the release date being September).

Parts of DQ3 HD-2D looked forgeous, but some of those earlier shots in the reveal looked atrocious.

Little about that excited me, but fair play to Nintendo for actually bothering despite the Switch 2 being an open secret that's presumably less than 12 months away from launching.

The Zelda game looked pretty cool, though. It seems somewhat inspired by the Ultrahand/Fuse abilities in Tears Of The Kingdom.

Some of the third-party games looked like trash, though. The Switch might be almost eight years old, but that doesn't excuse a Looney Tunes sports game with graphics barely any better than Simpson's Wrestling on the PS1 :D

Yakuza is an interesting one given the Wii U release (that ought to have been given a belated western release around the 2015 window if you ask me) really seemed to sour things from the end of the director. Anyway, that was a nothing no.

Has anyone played northern powerhouse “Thank Goodness You’re Here”?

Rumour is the Virtual Boy launch on NSO will be without the one truly acclaimed game on the platform, Virtual Boy Wario Land (1995). If that's the case, then I'll absolutely be keeping mine sealed in its box. I'm still hoping you can play it on your TV without the stupid tripod accessory anyway.

The year's 2nd biggest VB news is here.

Virtual Boy NSO goes live 17 Feb. Launches with unreleased F -Zero game, Mario Tennis and VB Wario Land (phew) among others.

Reliable rumour people (Nate the Hate) saying next direct will be a Partner Showcase on 5 Feb. A little disappointed, but I guess NS2 is a different prospect third party wise.

Lifetime shipments:

NSW 155m
NS2 17m

Still one more quarter left for the fiscal year. Nintendo has maintained their 19m projection, which should be easily achieved.

155m is officially higher than DS, but an extra 5m is unlikely to beat the PS2 after Sony suddenly found an extra 5m units down the couch having previously had official figures for it at 152 or whatever it was.

Mario Kart World is at 14m, Donkey Kong Bananza 4m and Kirby Air Riders got over 1m. Metroid Prime 4 is a hard one to track as all digital sales go towards the NSW version, meaning neither got over 1m, but still may have combined (it's lingering better than expected in the UK charts, which is admittedly not high sales).

Was hoping the rumoured Partner Direct would have been announced today. The sooner it's over the sooner we'll get a main one.

Isn’t that roughly what the Switch sold in its first year?
Key will be the longevity either way.
