No more Christmas songs it's Boxing Day Sunday

Had a couple of festive drinks down the pub and just gorged myself on a bit of buffet. I refuse to be drawn into the secular nightmare that post-Christmas Mopsy has become.
 
I don't actually put decorations up any more. I got fed up with how miserable the place looked as soon as they were taken down.

We went to a large Sainsburys but it was closed. The cheek! Poundland too, I was looking forward to 50p bargains
 
I definitely remember the 12th night thing from my childhood - it was my mum's thing. My dad would hold off until New Year and then he'd want to start taking stuff down. Especially after we had the cat who was want to get tangled in the Xmas tree or make the occasional leap for a string of cards (does anyone still do that, display Xmas cards on a bit of string pinned to the wall?)
 
We always recognised 12th Night as well, but I'm not sure what the 'penalty' was.

And yes, cards on string - although I seem to recall it was a kind of red or green festive twine.

My mum still puts her cards on strings, they're vertical and there are special tiny red and green plastic things like dolly pegs to pin them onto the strings. The family cards go on the mantelpiece, friends, distant relatives and hangers-on cards go on the strings.
 
What's wrong with cards on string? :shy:

My mum has always hung up the cards like that too!

Never heard of the goblins, although I know about taking the decorations down by twelfth night - just not totally sure when that is. 5th or 6th
 
A lot of superstitions in the UK seem to be very specific, and then just end in “… or you’ll get bad luck.” I feel like they just forgot what the ending should be

Update from my parents house: my day told me I have “hair like prince Harry” although I don’t have, and have never had, red hair
